The Angelbird Wings MX2 1TB PCIe upgrade with native Trim support is a game changer for my old Mid 2010 Mac Pro. Im running Yosemite to take advantage of the native Trim support in a pro audio configuration. Since its PCIe it bypasses the native 3Gb/s SATA interface so its much faster than sledding an SSD on its internal bus. The only things faster would be PCIe mounted flash blades which are limited in capacity and no native trim support or multiple SSDs in a raid configuration on a PCIe 6/GBs SATA card. I had contacted Angelbird directly before ordering and they were fast and responsive to my questions. Performance: Using Blackmagic’s Disk Speed test, speed is faster than my 6/GBs Sata mounted Samsung 850 pro SSD. Around 30% faster write speed (694.1 MB/s MX2 vs 487.5 MB/s 850pro) and around 15% faster write speed (749.9MB/s MX2 vs 522.9MB/s 850pro). It does have a number of blue and white LED’s which blink status of the drive (read write) which are visible out the back on the wall if your tower is mounted at eye level. One interesting note, the company mentioned having the ability to factory upgrade the capacity which would require sending the unit to them directly, it was good for me to know there’s further expansion options. I highly recommend this card if your looking to bring some drive capacity, speed and native trim support.

Purchased 2 for my office in August and discovered they aren’t TRIM enabled according to Apple’s System Info app. This was a big selling point before purchase. The drives shipped with no software (which is fine) but there was also none on their website which the manual referenced. Email support was prompt and said the drives do in fact support TRIM but for some reason this wasn’t displayed in Apple’s reporting. They said a software update was due in about a month to make it display correctly. So I could wait for the software or use Terminal now to manually enable. They also apologized for the state of their website (which until now in late Dec still lists this product as coming soon). 2 months later, a reminder email about the updated software went unanswered. I eventually used Terminal to allow TRIM. The drives work well and the aluminum hardware is beautifully made. We get high 600 to low 700MB/s read write using Blackmagic on MacPro towers. The workflow is greatly improved (weve come from traditional drives). But we paid a premium for peace of mind and long term support which I dont think were getting.
