I bought this for my stand alone firewall appliance. I want it to be protected and I don’t want it shutting down every time there is a blip in the power. This is exactly what I expected from APC and exactly what I was looking for. If I would change one thing, I would like APC to include software for its controlled shutdown sequence that works in Linux. My firewall is a Linux based system, so when the battery runs down the system goes down.

I installed this UPS after a series of power glitches during a windstorm… not enough for the backup generator to kick in, but enough for the satellite receiver to ‘lose its brains’ and require time to reset. Three year warranty is a plus! The unit does provide good surge and battery backup protection, but there is one drawback. All 8 outlets are not fully accessible because they are spaced so closely together! Three of the four in each row are close and not usable if your peripherals have the larger 3-prong plugs. Of course many of my printers and add-ons have the big transformer plugs and I didn’t think they would fit. But it seems that APC would want to space these outlets further apart to make them all accessible. I am disappointed in this feature from APC.

I purchase three of the more expensive APC backups because I wanted to have the option of silencing the repeated alarm when the power went out. According to the information I read, this was possible through the use of the software. After reading all of the instructions included, there is one sentence that states that the software does not work with MacOS systems. Now, there are a lot of Mac users and this problem, according to the forums out there has been an issue for years. Thank goodness I could research to find out how to do the basic set up for my computer but when I called Customer Service, they confirmed that in fact, their software does not work with MacOS system software and could offer no assistance. For that reason I am disappointed.

I like the fact that I can change the battery whenever it goes bad. I mounted it right to the back of my desk so I can roll it out and there is no mess of wires on the floor.

The APC BE550G Back-UPS give AC power when your Utility Company power fails. I am using this UPS device with my NAS drive and Laptop combination. If I loose power this UPS unity willprovide more than sufficient power for me to perform orderly shut down for my NAS and Laptop, if my laptop battery is low.

I bought my first APC after lightening destroyed my hard drive – that unit saved it several times later and lasted six years. My new unit has a ground detection light which told me that the outlet I was using was not properly grounded. I fixed that and now feel fully protected. The only fault I find is that the power cord is shorter than the earlier unit causing me to use an extension cord to reach the closest outlet.
