This UPS came in handy during the electrical upgrade of my house wiring. My PC never went down when power was temporarily shut off and it even warned me when neutral and hot were reversed. Best yet, the unit runs cool. It’s just well designed and I have five around the house and another six in my office protecting everything from switches, PCs, secuity and telephone systems.

This is a battery backup for an Edit system. MPEG2-DVD encoding seems to take a bit more juice and this does well. A lower voltage unit did not suffice for this task and would give me warning sounds. the 550 solved that.

It only got 1 because I can’t give zero. I bought this product in January 2012. After seven months, it started going into alarm mode even though there had been no power failure. (I was sure the power had no problem because the microwave loses its head at the least dip.) After lengthy emailing with their customer service rep, they replaced the unit (but made me pay the postage.) Now the replacement unit has started the same crazy behavior. Last night at 3 am the alarm went off despite no power blip. I’ve told APC I’m finished. I wish I hadn’t ever bought this shabby product.

This unit replaces an APC Back-UPS 350 that served me faithfully for many years but eventually gave up the ghost. This 550 model is almost the exact same size but somehow manages to pack a lot more battery into the same pace. The layout of battery protected outlets to just surge protected outlets is switched in relation to the units power chord as compared to the 350, but it didn’t matter because it still works in the LAN closet I have this unit installed in. I almost switched brands to save a little money and am glad I didn’t because of the excellent track record I have had with APC UPSs.

I have been using this and other APC models for years and it was time to replace one since it was completely dead and refused to be resurrected. I had another dead unit too a couple of years ago, so they are not perfect. Strangely enough I never had to just replace the battery cartridge. There us a newer model replacing this unit but it has different dimensions and won’t fit in the space I have available.

Excellent product for the SOHO environment. Tech support is knowledgeable and responsive. The only negatives are lack of Mac OS X support (other than generic UPS). Also, it would be nice if the outlets were either spaced out or rotated 90 to better accomidate more wall warts.

The instructions for connecting battery seem to apply to a slightly different model. In step 2 of Connect Battery, I was unable to remove the battery from the unit. With some difficulty, I slid the battery wire onto the battery terminal. Since this is a new unit I have been unable to rate it’s performance other than telephone pass through is ok and and other circuits provide power.

The ES 550G was a perfect fit for the wattage/VA rating, the size (for the space I had to put it in) & the number of outlets. I do wish the cord were a bit longer and that a statement was made on the box & in the literature that the unit could be used in any position (horizontally, sideways/ vertically and/or hung on the wall) if that is the case. I also wish you would give joules ratings for your UPS products (the surge suppression portion). Finally, I wish ALL of the surge & surge + battery backup outlets were sufficiently far apart to allow transformers to be plugged in side-by-side. That would make the unit even more functional & really wouldn’t require much additional separation. Overall, I rate it at 4.5 stars (but you didn’t give me that option in the star ratings above, so I had to give it a 5).

Have one 550 on the router and the other on the entertainment center. Works great, like the 2 APC 1500’s on the computers. We’ve had a lot of thunderstorms recently and they all worked as you would expect. At one point we did have a surge that brightened the lights just before power was lost. Everything on the APC’s are fine.
