The Apple Mac mini now features Apple’s first chip designed specifically for Mac. The Apple M1 integrates the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, I/O, and more into a single system on a chip (SoC). All of this boosts the Mac mini to an entirely different level, as it features up to three times faster CPU performance, up to six times faster graphics, and up to 15 times faster machine learning with the 16-Core Neural Engine. You’ll be able to work, play, and create on a Mac mini with more power and speed than previous models, making it suitable for home offices, gaming, music creation, digital art and signage, and more. Adding to the Mac mini’s power is 8GB of RAM, which helps to ensure smooth multitasking and also allows the computer to quickly access frequently used files and programs.
The 8-Core GPU delivers a sharp, clear picture, and you’ll be able to output video to an external display using the system’s Thunderbolt 3 ports, which feature native DisplayPort output, or use the built-in HDMI 2.0 port. You’ll be able to connect one 6K / 60 Hz display using Thunderbolt 3 and a second 4K / 60 Hz display using HDMI 2.0.
For storing your files, this Mac mini is equipped with a 512GB SSD that delivers speeds of up to 3.4 GB/s. If you want to add external peripherals, two Thunderbolt 3 / USB4 ports that support bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, as well as 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2, plus charging and power for external devices. Thanks to two 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports, you’ll still be able to connect other devices to this system. Gigabit Ethernet is built in for wired networking, or use Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for wireless access. Bluetooth 5.0 technology will allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals, including keyboards, mice, and headsets. Sound is output using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple’s Mac mini operates using an internal 150W power supply that runs off 100-240 VAC at 50 to 60 Hz.
This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple’s website for upgrade eligibility Also, please be aware that a keyboard and mouse are not included.

So why is it a game changer? It’s at a reasonable price point as you get a small form factor, but you are also getting the latest, newest processor and ram. I think this chip is a big deal for Apple and may become their bread and butter longterm as other manufacturers may request it over Intel. I have used premiere pro on a 2018 mac mini that has an intel i7 and the M1 outperforms it as far as I can tell in every way, and that is when running the native intel program on the M1. And it costs less than half the price of the 2018 model. I noticed with Premiere pro that on the Intel version of Mac Mini it would severely lag if I tried to do other tasks while exporting out. However with the M1 I have not experienced that at all. For the price I paid for the M1 I don’t think I would have found a pc that compares performance wise. I hope this is a wakeup call to Intel and others that we need to step into 2021 and find ways to make things faster and better without costing an arm and a leg for every new improvement. I think the M1 Mac Mini has accomplished that.

The new chip M1 is amazing! I’m very impressed!!! 8gb ram its enough in my opinion. 16gb it’s not necessary I guess.

This is my 4th mac mini and it was a bear to get up and running. First my data transfer from previous mini kept rejecting me. Finally got it to work. Then the touch ID (bought touch keyboard) wouldn’t work. The instructions on that were wrong. You need to repeatedly tap power button instead of twice. Anyway its up and running now and works fine with Photoshop 2021.

This is probably one of the better dollar per pound of performance in Apple’s ecosystem. Obviously you still need to provide a mouse and keyboard, but for the cost, it’s a great way to get that M1 performance. Apps that are native and don’t need rosetta translation and screamin fast, even on a midlevel config. I was indeed suprised by the speed for the cost/package.

I bought this M1 Mac mini to replace my wife’s aging 2012 Mac mini. She is very happy with it, but I was blown away by the improved performance. No more spinning beach balls. Super fast startup, blazing fast app launching and crisp response are better than any other Mac we’ve ever owned. Highly recommended!

I am a psychotherapist working remotely with an elaborate video studio setup using a mirrorless camera and broadcast mic. My MacBook would sound like a jet engine, this machine is silent cool and stupid fast. I also love to do video and photo and it’s great too. I have the caldigic ts3+ and will be getting their new thunderbolt 4 hub . I getting the cheapest one that I may replace in a couple years works for me. Reasonable 5 year depreciation write off.

It is fast but since I upgraded from an 11yo MacBook Pro, anything recent would be a huge speed bump up. I appreciate all the ports, backward and forward compatible. Setup was incredibly easy, transferred everything from a time machine backup. My only complaint regards the crappy speaker sound but that’s easily remedied with a pair of external speakers.

I love the m1. It’s fantastic. Fast in final cut. Crazy good at editing 4k video from my Sony a7sIII. BUT HOT DOG MY APPLE MAGIC MOUSE & APPLE KEYBOARD REFUSE TO STAY CONNECTED/CONNECT AT ALL. I’ve had to spend $50 or so on a Bluetooth mouse/keyboard with a usb dongle in order to have a working system. And that means ditching the Magic Mouse that I’ve grown to love over the last 5 years.. Seems like such an odd issue that could be fixed with software update. It’s frustrating to say the least.

I’m a professional programmer that also spends a lot of time doing audio production and audio engineering in my spare time and I needed something that would combine the software compatibility of Windows and the Unix-like environment of Linux for programming (or just having access to a bash/zsh shell natively), and this has proven to be an incredible sweet spot for my use case. If you were curious like me if this would still be fast enough in light of the M1 Pro/Max chips coming out, have no fear, despite being the cheaper of the offerings from Apple this thing still rips. I’ve had little issue in terms of performance and I’ve even gone out of my way to be reckless with apps running in the background and Chrome tabs just to test the limits of this thing. Even with very heavy audio sessions in Bitwig with lots of VST plugins and virtual instruments I have yet to hit a wall either with the 16GB unified memory or the CPU. It even does a bit of gaming fairly well (tested with League of Legends, Baldur’s Gate 3) but don’t buy this if you’re looking for a gaming machine due to performance being pretty middle of the road in regards to that. As far as programming goes my Rust code compiles significantly faster than it did before on my Windows/Linux machine and I’m happy overall with using this machine as a dev environment for multiple languages. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an incredible budget professional computer. Only cons are that the ports are a bit lacking; I intend to buy a USB hub/dock for this very soon.

Fantastic stuff. I would have sprung for a larger HD but considering it wasn’t available and this was a business need, got this one instead. Processing power is great, iOS apps on MacOS is great. For all the faults with Apple, at least the hardware is always nice.

I shoot in BRAW and the Mac Mini handles it well, but it handles ProRes faster than my 2018 i7 Mac Mini with an 8GB EGPU. I am very impressed with this machine and would recommend it to anyone who shoots or edits in ProRes or H.265 codec (Like the R5) if you’re shooting in BRAW then you may want to wait until the newer Mac’s are released. I don’t love only having two TB4 ports but this Mac kills my $7,000 Mac mini (With EGPU) build on so many levels for $1,400 (I got the 16GB unified Ram with 1TB SSD) that I would buy this and an M1 Laptop and still have enough money for monitors and more SSD TB3 drives.

I don’t think I’ve ever used a more powerful machine. The only challenge is that not all apps are optimized for M1 yet, but I guess that’s something you have to deal with being an early adopter. Even the non-optimized apps though – running via Rosetta 2 – are way faster than my Intel-based MacBook Pro with an i7 processor.

This was on sale and I’d been looking at them for a while to use as a desktop machine for routine tasks (email, etc) and potentially photo editing. Compared to my usual MacBook Pro it was a little bit of a learning curve to adjust to no TouchBar or fingerprint sensor but it’s a quick adjustment. Works very well for the purpose and, at 8 GB of RAM, I’d prefer a bit more but so far I’m very happy with it. Very cool to the touch, no heat from it that I can detect, so the power advantages Apple claims from the M1 chip are justified.

This thing is fast, really power efficient, and a lot of bang for the buck. Over a dozen browser tabs open, multiple apps open (including Logic Pro w/plugins), and it doesn’t skip a beat. It’s amazing how cool to the touch the Mac Mini is, even while using a lot of system resources. When installing my first app that has not been updated for the M1 chip, Rosetta installed in seconds and the app works flawlessly on it. I have not had any problems thus far installing and running x86 apps. As usual, B&H service was excellent and it was well packaged. I hope to check out the NYC brick and mortar store on my next visit!
