The Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter from Apple converts a Thunderbolt 3 port on a system to a Thunderbolt 2 port, letting you use previous-generation devices on your new Thunderbolt 3 computer. This adapter supports external storage drives as well as Thunderbolt-capable (any version) displays. With a bi-directional design, you can connect a Thunderbolt 3 mobile device to a Thunderbolt 2 computer, using an optional Thunderbolt 2 cable. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes a USB-C connector, which offers a reversible design.
Please note that this adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

I wanted to use my 2012 27in iMac as a second monitor with my new 2017 iMac. Plugged this adapter in to my 2017, and then used a thunderbolt cable to run from that to my 2012. Now I have a great 2nd monitor.

Works as expected, allows me to connect older thunderbolt 2 accessories to my newer MacBook pro. Watchout for cheaper ones that are just display port to usbc. They will only work for monitors, not as an input. If you are attaching accessories, this is what you need.

This adaptor has no Power Delivery for TB2 to TB3 . Energy can be provided using Dynapower Netstor NA611TB3 and probably by similar self powered devices. This device has two USB-C ports. Use one for the Apple adapter and the other for your bus powered device. This is an expensive work, but the Netstor includes an M.2 TB3 enclosure.

I prefer the original Apple adapters verses generic. I still use legacy MacBook Pros & MacBook Airs with Thunderbolt 2, and still have Thunderbolt 2 devises & workflows, so this adapter allows them to stay productive.

Even if your MacBookPro is running the latest version of OS-X Catalina, this T3-to-T2 adapter WILL NOT necessarily connect your newer T3 devices to your T2 computer. For example, I have this adapter plugged into a CalDigit T3+ dock, and a T2 MacBookPro. The dock won’t light up because this supposedly ‘bi-directional’ adapter never activates when the host is T2. Apple should clarify the conditions required for this devices to work with T2 hosts, because if it cannot work for a self-powered T3 dock, then how is it going to help with all of the other bus-powered T3 devices that we want to plug into T2 computers?
