The Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter from Apple converts a Thunderbolt 3 port on a system to a Thunderbolt 2 port, letting you use previous-generation devices on your new Thunderbolt 3 computer. This adapter supports external storage drives as well as Thunderbolt-capable (any version) displays. With a bi-directional design, you can connect a Thunderbolt 3 mobile device to a Thunderbolt 2 computer, using an optional Thunderbolt 2 cable. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes a USB-C connector, which offers a reversible design.
Please note that this adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

I purchased this to go with a new Thunderbolt 3 drive and it does exactly what is supposed to- allows me to connect the new RAID drive to my 2015 Mac that only has the older T2 connections.

Needed this to get info transferred off a Thunderbolt 2 iMac to a new MacBook Pro TB3. Worked fine. Transfer data rates certainly what I would have expected from either TB 2 or TB3 but it did the job. Expect most buying are one a done as well.

Want to use your aging, but still valuable and stylish 27 Thunderbolt monitor, with a new MacBook Pro? Get this adapter and problem solved. All the docking station features work as well.

I have two external thunderbolt 2 monitors I wanted to link to my new 2017 iMac with the thunderbolt 3 ports. I thought a couple of these items would be the solution, but they did not work. Apparently a couple of CHOETECH USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter Cables (4Kx2K@60Hz) were what I needed instead. Unfortunately this item is not returnable, hence my low star rating. I think it would be helpful if the description was clearer about that for novices like me.

It may say Thunderbolt 3/USB-C but it doesn’t work that way. Yes they are the same connector but the connector doesn’t no work between them.

So far so good. Just in case anyone’s wondering, this is working with the Universal Audio Apollo x4. I did have to update my OS to 10.12. I’m not sure if it was only because of the Universal Audio requirement, or if there’s something where the older operating systems don’t recognize the thunderbolt 3 devices. It’s just something to keep in mind if it concerns you. I haven’t really cared enough to look further into it because it’s working for what I needed it for.

In upgrading my computer, I was so worried all my older Thunderbolt 2 peripherals wouldn’t work. This adapter made for the smoothest transition I could have hoped for! Does the job perfectly!

I used this to connect a thunderbolt 2 raid array to a new Mac mini with thunderbolt 3 connections. Measured approximately 20Gbit/sec speed for disk transfers as expected. Apple should drop the price on this adapter though.

It works, I couldn’t find any cheaper versions but this gets the job done.

Bought this to use with a TB3 SSD drive to hook up my Mac Pro. It works great. I now appreciate the speed of the TB connecters. DG

Needed this to adopt my MacPro (late 2013) thunderbolt 2 cable to have it’s male end thunderbolt 3, to plug into my G Technology RAID drive. Works simply and perfectly…got hi data throughput.

It does what it does. However it doesn’t work as a mini display port, which I wasn’t aware of. Other than that it does exactly what it should.

I was successfully able to use my adapter with a Thunderbolt 1 cable to connect my G-Technology Thunderbolt 1 drive to my MacBook Pro with Thunderbolt 3 ports. Wow, talk about a life changing event.

I bought both the Apple Thunderbolt (TB) 2 to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter and the Apple TB 3 Male to TB 2 Female Adapter for use with a 2017 MacBook Pro (MBP). This MBP has four Thunderbolt (TB) 3 ports but no inbuilt ethernet (or Firewire) ports. I prefer the security of a wired connection and the MUCH faster file transfers speed of GigaBit ethernet to the MBP’s normal wi-fi connection. TB2 and TB3 connectors are different sizes. Therefore, to use the ethernet adapter with the TB3 ports on my MBP, I had to buy both adapters and connect them in series with my ethernet cable. It looks kludged, but it works fine. By the way, I also use the TB3 to TB2 adapter with an Apple Thunderbolt To Firewire(FW) Adapter to connect my Firewire devices to the 2017 MBP. The product description for the TB to FW adapter did not specify that the TB3 to TB2 adapter was required for connection to the TB3 connections of current MBPs.
