The Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter from Apple converts a Thunderbolt 3 port on a system to a Thunderbolt 2 port, letting you use previous-generation devices on your new Thunderbolt 3 computer. This adapter supports external storage drives as well as Thunderbolt-capable (any version) displays. With a bi-directional design, you can connect a Thunderbolt 3 mobile device to a Thunderbolt 2 computer, using an optional Thunderbolt 2 cable. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes a USB-C connector, which offers a reversible design.
Please note that this adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

Does not work when connecting LaCie RAID 5big Thunderbolt 2 to NEW Macbook Pro 15″ (2017) Thunderbolt 3.

I used this adapter to connect my 2013 Mac Pro (Thunderbolt 2) to a new Thunderbolt 3 hard drive. I was able to edit 4K video files off of the new drive. I then bought a 2019 Mac Pro and was able to use this adapter to access a Thunderbolt 2 hard drive. Win-win.

perfect for connecting my external drives

Along with a Thunderbolt cable, this cable worked for hooking an older Mac Mini to a recent one with only Thunderbolt 3 ports, for direct data transfer

Needed to interface some older TB 2 devices to my TB 3 connection on the new MacBook Pro. No issues. Well built.

So it is what it is. I wouldn’t trust a 3rd party adapter for this-

very expensive

There are no problems in work

Needed this for connecting several peripherals, couple chain linked. Works as good as I hoped

Great!

This is the only way I could connect my 27 in. Thunderbolt Display. The adapter works with any Thunderbolt device: Ethernet adapter, hard drives, etc. Well worth the price.

The choice of change all connections it’s on the manufacturer, but as always the user has to pay a high price for compatibility.

typical apple move to make an interface that no one can make without paying apple and then charge a huge amount for some copper and plastic. works nice, but the price is WAY too high.

pricey but it works

I upgraded to a MacBook Pro with only USB C/Thunderbolt 3 I/O ports. I still have numerous adaptors from my old MacBook Pro & Air that used Thunderbolt 2 (& 1) ports. It works with the Thunderbolt 2 adaptors, but doesn’t work with the Thunderbolt 1 adaptors.

Let’s be honest; if you’re looking at this adapter, chances are you also have the FireWire to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and you’re looking to get some adapter-on-adapter action to do DV/Digital8 tape captures. Good news: this adapter works for that. I’m using a Sony Digital8 Handycam with my M1 MacBook Pro, and it works for capturing both from tape playback and straight from the camera. Device control in Premiere Pro doesn’t work consistently with my specific camcorder, but it probably does work for most DV camcorders (and more stable editing software, wink wink). Bad news: only Apple makes this adapter, and it’s $50 brand new. That price tag seems a bit ridiculous to me, but there are sadly no alternative products. As such, I bought my adapter used (about $35) and recommend others do the same, if possible.

Glad to finally be in an era where USB-C has taken over as a predominant shape. And for the easy cost of $50, you get yet another dongle!

I used this to connect my old Apollo twin to the M1 Mac mini. Everything works great.

I still cant figure out how it works exactly but I put it on the point of my sword and shout by the power of Grayskull, I have the power and suddenly I have the strength of ten Olympic athletes and now I can ride my mountain lion all over the place! The only con is my hair is a little awkward looking.. but meh.. Sincerely, He-Man

I needed this to do one of two thing. 1) Connect a monitor (Doesn’t work with minidisplayport) 2) Connect Thunderbolt 2 Blackmagic Shuttle to the Thunderbolt 3 port (Doesn’t work) In both cases it just simply doesn’t work. Sad excuse for an adapter.
