The Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter from Apple converts a Thunderbolt 3 port on a system to a Thunderbolt 2 port, letting you use previous-generation devices on your new Thunderbolt 3 computer. This adapter supports external storage drives as well as Thunderbolt-capable (any version) displays. With a bi-directional design, you can connect a Thunderbolt 3 mobile device to a Thunderbolt 2 computer, using an optional Thunderbolt 2 cable. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes a USB-C connector, which offers a reversible design.
Please note that this adapter does not support DisplayPort displays like the Apple LED Cinema Display or third-party DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort displays.

One of the only ways to connect a Thunderbolt 3 device to a Thunderbolt 2 device. Learned the hard way that I needed this to connect my new Promise Pegasus HD to my slightly older MacBook Pro that only has Thunderbolt 2. But worked like a charm when the guy at B&H (great service) told me about it. Ordered T-bolt 3 to USB cables first – no go.

Most of my older peripherals use the Thunder Bolt 2 connector. So with this adapter, I can still use them in my new iMac, which offers Thunderbolt 3. First up, I linked the new iMac to my old iMac and used the old one as a second monitor in target mode. Worked fine.

This product should be taken off the market immediately. It is literally just for thunderbolt, No other protocols are allowed. That means no mini display port monitors! It would with Thunderbolt 1 and 2 monitors but the photo on the box is vague and doesn’t specify this at all. Shame on you Apple for not being more clear!!!

Works as expected. USB-C to Thunderbolt to a LG Thunderbolt monitor/hub works great.

It does what it should, although it doesn’t like going through an adapter before the computer. I have a Verbatim adapter that allows me to plug in two USB 3s, an SD and Micro SD card, and two USB 2s but when I plug in the Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter, the computer doesn’t read it. So, you just have to plug directly into the computer and it works fine.

New computer has Thunderbolt, so this adapter is just what I needed to hook things up for importing video.

Most of the external hubs only works with USB-C or mini display port. None could allow the previous apple 27 display to connect. That one uses older thunderbolt connection. This adapter solves the problem.

New Macs don’t have a firewire port, so you need this for your old devices. Get one if you’ve got a firewire device and don’t want to put up with a power supply.

It took me to long to get around to having something I wanted to try it on. when that didn’t work I tried it for another purpose. It may work or may not, I can’t tell. Obviously its functionality is limited. Too bad, since there is no other simple adapter for certain connections, either.

You will need to purchase additional adapters to connect to a Panasonic DVX100B tape base camcorder.Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter, connects to a Thunderbolt to Firewire and then a 9 pin to 4 pin.

I need to hook my 2013 Mac Pro (TB 2) to my new Air sometimes, and this seems to be the only way. The price is exorbitant, though.

I Don’t like that you have to do this . Adapter from Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 , then another adapter thunderbolt 2 to 3 . But it works. So not sure how I should rate this. No problems with B & H though.

Backward compatibility is important when you have been in this game for long (my first Mac bought in 1993). This adapter made it possible to daisy-chain an old LaCie Firewire 400 drive containing old photos through first a Firewire to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor and then the current Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. Plug and play. Worked like a charm.

I used this to adapt a new Sonnet TB3 pcie chassis to work with a Mac Pro Late 2013, which only has TB2. I could also be used to attach an older TB2 chassis to a TB3 Mac.

Bought this at the same time I purchased a Dell xps 15 laptop. Turns out it doesn’t work with windows (or Dell specifically?) You have to purchase a non-apple branded adapter that costs $20-30 more.

It’s the right thing for the job. Other adapters will not work with Thunderbolt Drives.

It works and works well.

The adaptor was used to connect a MacBook Pro 2016 with touch bar to an older iMac with TB2 as a second monitor.

It works A-OK, no loose wires to fall out. You might have older external drives with Thunderbolt 2 but a new Mac with Thunderbolt 3 connectors. The 2 kinds of plug don’t fit one another but this adapter solves the problem with no guess works or glitches.
