Apple has re-engineered the Mac mini with 8th Generation Intel Core processors, giving it even more power for industrial-grade tasks, such as home automation, giant render farms, running a live concert sound engine, or testing your latest iOS or iPadOS app. Along with improved system and graphics performance, an all-new thermal architecture includes all-flash storage, a bigger fan, expanded vents, and a redesigned power supply, and Apple’s T2 security chip. This Mac mini is powered by 3.6 GHz Intel Core i3 Quad-Core processor, while 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM helps to ensure smooth multitasking and also allows the computer to quickly access frequently used files and programs.
Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 630 delivers a sharp, clear picture, and you’ll be able to output video to an external display using the system’s Thunderbolt 3 ports, which feature native DisplayPort output, or use the built-in HDMI 2.0 port. Up to three 4K displays are supported between any two Thunderbolt 3 ports and the HDMI port, or you can connect one 5K display via THunderbolt 3 and one 4K display via HDMI 2.0.
For storage of your files, this Mac mini is equipped with a 256GB PCIe SSD that has a sequential read speed of up to 3.4 GB/s. If you want to add external peripherals, four Thunderbolt 3 ports support bi-directional transfer speeds of up to 40 Gb/s, while also supporting 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 (USB 3.1), device charging, and an external GPU. Thanks to two 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) Type-A ports, you’ll still be able to connect other devices to this system. Gigabit Ethernet is built in for wired networking, or use dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) for wireless networking. Bluetooth 5.0 technology will allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals, including keyboards, mice, and headsets. Sound is output using a 3.5mm headphone jack. Apple’s Mac mini operates using an internal 150W power supply that runs off 100-240 VAC at 50 to 60 Hz.
This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple’s website for upgrade eligibility.

I upgraded to this model from a 2011 model with only 16gb of RAM. With this unit I doubled the RAM, and upgraded to the 1TB SSD. It’s exactly what I needed to be able to process a large number of photos in Photoshop. This model is considerably quieter than my previous, and not quite as hot. I did have to purchase an adapter to connect it to my Thunderbolt display, but that has worked perfectly as well. I have nothing negative to say, it’s perfect!

I bought a Mac mini earlier this year after my new MacBook Pro had a screen issue. Even the base model (which I have) has better performance compared to the Intel-based MacBook Pro, in terms of RAM & multitasking and you get so many ports! If you have a recent iPad (which works as a portable display for the Mac mini with Sidecar in MacOS), then you may not need a laptop computer at all! I also found the best deal at B&H 🙂

The Mac mini is a replacement for our old 2011 Mac mini. We use it as a standalone server for a variety of jobs: DNS, DHCP, file server and a backup server. We have two OWC Thunderbays connected with 16TB each that we use for backup using Carbon Copy Cloner and for file sharing for all of our Macs and Linux machines. We could not be happier with this configuration. The previous mini worked continuously and flawlessly for over seven years. We expect no less from this one.

After waiting for what felt like an eternity, Apple finally rolled out a pro grade replacement for my 2012 MacMini. My 6 year old Mini is still in excellent working order but could not handle the rigors of 4K video editing. I bought a fully loaded model new Mini and replaced my wifes desktop with the Mini I had. The new Mini is everything I hoped it would be for editing multiple angles 4K video. At first I was disappointed that the only option not available was a dedicated video graphics card. But then I bought an eGPU. The Sonnet RX 570 Breakaway Puck along with a 32 Samsung 4K HDR gaming monitor make the new Mini a quantum leap forward, game changing combination. All is quite well now and I could not be more pleased.

I had an electronic store chain let me down with trying to get this mini. After one month of dealing with messages stating order is delayed, I contacted B&H. Not only did they price match this other store which was price matching B&H, they had it to me in two days. I’ve learned my lesson, I am now a loyal customer of B&H. Now as far as this mini goes; it’s fast; very fast! The boot times are amazing. Look! You get what you pay for. I deal with a lot of photos, and this config is perfect for me. An I7 chip with 32 gig of Ram and a 1 terabyte hard drive is just right. I have an older lightning external hard drive which lightning port is different than version three lightning on new mini. The external hard drive also had usb 3 port, so I use that. I’m going to have to buy an SD card to usb C/lightning cable for my SD cards. Thanks again B&H from a very satisfied customer.

I see people say it lacks in the graphics department, but I am not a high end video editor, so its a fine machine for what I do. And its very quiet sitting on the desk.

Works well for an entertainment center. The only problem is that it does not use its native display resolution for a 4K TV through the HDMI port. In order to get that to work, one must use a separate Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapter

I am in the process of upgrading all my staff computers from windows to Mac. These minis are perfect, utilizing existing monitors, keyboards and mice. Took end users about a day to reorient to macOS and they love the simplicity of Apple. Our network is now over 50% Apple.

I had this thing set up for an hour. I let it run all its updates and whatnot and decided to test it out. I downloaded Sketchup Viewer and Inkscape. Both fairly lightweight apps with very low system requirements, yet I was astonished at how slow they ran. Drawing a rectangle in Inkscape was a guessing game as my shape only caught up with my cursor when I stopped. Sketchup Viewer stuttered so badly the camera would continue to move after I’d let go of the mouse. This is beyond unacceptable. I don’t care if they are the lowest specs for this model; a 6-year old Chromebook should not have a smoother frame rate than a current-gen Mac Mini.

The first impression was not encouraging: Although the power light came on, no video signal! Off to authorized Apple repair facility to see if the Mac Mini can be made healthy or is truly DOA!

This is my second Mac mini and I can see a big difference in speed and performance from my first Mac mini. My older model still works perfectly and I still use it often. But it lacks the internet security only featured on the new models. My financial accounts must be used on the new model only. Both models function in different ways for me. I bought from B&H for the price and its customer service reputation.

I love this Mac mini. I placed it in my kitchen to replace the Apple TV, Apple TV lost authentication on some apps. The Apple TV has not lost the authentication. Plus I added 32 gigs of memory and it’s lightning fast. I love this Macintosh mini.

I finally upgraded from my 2004 Mac Mini due to my OS no longer being supported and an increasing number of functions taken away from me over the years. The new Mac Mini seems to be great. I hope it lasts as long and works as well as my old one (which I hate to see go).

I purchased the latest model of the Mac mini (Late 2018) in December 2019 as a replacement to my aging 2011 Mac mini. Since I don’t really need the portability of a laptop, and I already have several nice monitors, mice, and keyboards, the mini makes for a good desktop computer that’s less expensive than a comparable iMac. The real question for me was how to configure the memory and storage space for the machine. The base model comes with an Intel Core i3 CPU, 8 GB of RAM, and a 128 GB SSD for storage. B&H was offering this model at an incredible $120 off of the $799 list price. But there were little or no savings for higher-end models. So my review here is in the context of answering the question: Is the base model Mac mini good enough? I was initially very skeptical of the i3 CPU since I remember it being used for very low-end computers. But this i3 is from Intel’s 8th Generation family which has a Quad-Core processor running at 3.6 GHz. It does not support “Turbo Boost” which can increase the CPU clock speed as needed, or “Hyper-Threading” which allows for more parallel processing of certain programs. But the applications I run don’t really need or take advantage of these features. So the i3 works for me. As for the memory, 8 GB is OK for a lot of people. But I run a lot of applications at once, and I like to use multiple web browsers with lots of open tabs. That’s why I upgraded my 2011 Mac mini to 16 GB of RAM. But so far, the base memory configuration is working well. The Mac Operating System uses “virtual memory” to supplement the RAM when needed by swapping data back and forth from the hard drive. The built-in SSD operates faster than my older system, allowing the swapping to work better with smaller memory sizes. Besides, the 2018 Mac mini can have its memory upgraded at a later time for much less cost than buying it upfront. The real issue with the base model Mac mini is its storage capacity of only 128 GB. That’s way too small for anyone that has even a modest number of photos and videos. And unlike with memory, the SSD is soldered to the system and cannot be upgraded. I’m transitioning from my 2011 Mac mini that I upgraded to a 512 GB internal SSD. So I knew I would need to get an external drive of some sort. This is where things get very interesting. The 2018 Mac mini comes with an incredible range of Input/Output (I/O) ports, allowing me to connect to all types of external drives. I decided to purchase the 500 GB Samsung Portable T5 SSD drive, which is very popular for use with all types of computers. It’s list price is way less than the cost of internal SSD upgrades, and was also on holiday sale from B&H. The T5 has a USB-C interface but comes with a USB 3 adapter cable. I’m using the USB-C cable to get faster data transfer speeds. It’s worth noting that the 4 USB-C ports on the Mac mini are actually Thunderbolt 3 and allow for even faster (and more expensive) external drives. Some reviews suggest that connecting an external Thunderbolt 3 drive, such as the Samsung Portable SSD X5 with its so-called “NVMe interface,” approaches the speed of internal drive connections. I hope to experiment with that kind of drive in the future. One thing I did not consider is the Mac mini’s graphics capabilities. I’m not a gamer, and I’m not doing any heavy-duty video editing. I know from other reviews that the built-in “integrated” graphics included in models are inadequate for those types of applications. But because of the very high-speed features of Thunderbolt 3, you can connect an external Graphics Processing Unit (eGPU) and effectively upgrade the system to tackle those issues. So far, I’m very happy with the base model of the 2018 Mac mini. It satisfies my needs with only one extra purchase needed for an external SSD. What’s really attractive is the ability to upgrade-to start with a base-level machine and incrementally improve it over time. The very high-speed Thunderbolt 3 ports are the real game-changer. They effectively turn the computer inside-out, allowing for all kinds of external devices to be connected that operate almost as well as their internal counterparts. I may eventually end up paying a lot more for this machine. But at least I can get there in baby steps, and on my own terms.

I had a 2011 Mac Mini and was very pleased with it over the years. I was so happy when Apple announced the refreshed Mac Mini 2018. The system works perfectly, and performs very well. Definitely recommend it
