Great replacement for recently retired “old” bench vise!

My old 4″ bench vise broke, and I needed a replacement. I looked at Harbor Freight, but their vises were way too stiff and hard to adjust. Another local hardware store had Olympia vises, but the swivel only locked on one side.. they had some demos mounted and it was impossible to keep them from rotating, no matter how tight the one lock was made. I looked at the Craftsman, and they also had a swivel lock on one side only. This Bessey seemed to be just what I was looking for. I just finished mounting it to my bench top with 5/16″ lag screws. To get the rear jaw to overhang the edge of the workbench a bit, I aligned the base with one screw on either side and one in the back, and I had to overhang the base over the edge of the workbench by about 1/4″. Overall, the vise seems plenty tough and it looks great!

So far so good. Only had it a couple of days now. I’ve used it once. Seems like a good product

On me it was smaller than I expected to replace my old vise but probably is enough for my needs. Takes up little room and will work for most household needs. No hammering or heavy vise bending.

like the size of the anvil and the look of it all

I got this vise to replace a smaller one mounted on my work bench. This is as beefy a piece of machinery as you would want in a vise. The jaws open to about 4.5” and it has a 3” anvil surface, which I found very useful. It has a swivel base that rotates 360 degrees. Tough, durable and works as designed – nothing more to say

It was perfect and pretty durable. It was much smaller than my old one and fit on my bench well.

Works as designed. Chuck jaws have a very rough feel when opening/closing. Seems to offer adequate clamping pressure for most standard jobs. Just keep in mind you get what you pay for and it may no last as long or be as high quality as more expensive vises.

This is pretty small to be called a “heavy duty” vise, but it’s probably more than enough of a vise for the needs of the average homeowner. This vice has 4″ jaws with faces that have a serrated surface. Socket head machine screws are countersunk in to the faces of the jaws and the faces can be easily removed. They are not reversible however, so you can’t just flip them over to have smooth jaw faces. I have not been able to find a set of smooth jaw faces for this vise, but Bessey does make a set of plastic jaw covers that affix to the jaws with magnets. Experienced home machinists know that strips of leather are the common way to protect soft metals from damage by vice jaws…I cut up an old belt for that myself. There are two rotation lock screws on opposite sides of the turntable and they do a good job locking the vice in place once you rotate it to the ideal position for whatever chore you are doing. The casting is pretty well done and the non-machined surfaces are finished with a pebbled finish and a durable seeming clear coat. The anvil surface is square and flat so you can’t really use it to forge rounded parts, but I suspect that few casual home workers do that sort of thing anymore anyway.Bottom line, if you need a vise to straighten and sharpen your lawnmower blade, reform a steel corner bracket, clamp up a piece of aluminum U channel so you can attack it with a hacksaw, or straighten out a bent hinge or reinforcing strap, this is just fine.If you are shoeing horses or forging a crankshaft for your antique hit and miss engine, you’ll want something a bit heavier…but you knew that already.

You mount it and it’s beautiful works well with other tools even. I would recommend absolutely.

Good enough for home use. Rough casting. Handle is much too soft and bends easily. Far from heavy duty.

I had a 3 in. Bessey bench vise that worked great until the swivel lock nut broke. This 4 in. Bessey actually has a swivel lock nut on each side of the vise for an easier and strong lock up. This vise has 3 mounting holes in a triangle pattern, instead of the 4 mounting holes like on the smaller 3 in. version. Not sure if that matters, as the vise still mounted securely to the bench. Overall this is a nice bench vise with a small footprint, it seems to be a solid upgrade over it’s little brother. Also, this vise will work with the Inline Fabrications quick change bench system.
