Powerful, smart features but more expensive than competitors. I found this Bosch 11255 SDS plus on par performance wise with competitors (Dewalt, Makita, Milwaukee) but 10-15 percent more in cost (see full video review below). It ships with a ‘free’ innovative dust collection shroud that can be used with any drill. But designers did not allow for stowing the shroud in the supplied case. I found the quick adjust depth gauge too short for many drilling applications. It is powerful, easy to handle, and well made (made in Mexico) but more expensive than the field. About my rating:5 stars – Exceeds all expectations. Better than the competition in all aspects, design, cost, operation, and support (A+). 4 stars – Nicely done. Better than the competition and solves the problem. (B)3 stars – Works as expected. Has some shortcomings but gets the job done. Might be short in design, cost, longevity, or support. (C).2 stars – Falls short of expectations and needs improvement. Pass and look elsewhere. (D)1 star – Fails miserably. Does not get the job done, might even make things worse. Someone at the company should be fired. (F)

My wife has been on me for the last seven years to replace the banjo style tiled sink in our downstairs bathroom but I have put it off because I didn’t want to hand chisel out all that tile. This Bosch Bulldog Extreme with the 1 in. SDS-Plus Rotary Hammer made quick work of that counter top and back splash without destroying my walls or the existing cabinet. I was able to get a tile and thinset removal bit that made what would have been a several hour job into a job that took minutes. With the variable speed trigger and the knob setting on the chisel function it made this job extremely easy. I also needed to drill a 2 1/2″ hole in the wall of our master bedroom recently in order to install a ductless mini split a/c system. I had to drill a 2 1/2″ hole going from the inside to outside in sheetrock facing downward slightly so that everything drains correctly. I also had to go outside and drill a 2 1/2″ hole in stucco going from the outside to the inside making sure they both lined up perfectly. I had actually dreaded doing this because I was going to be up on a ladder when drilling through the stucco on the second floor of the house and I knew it was going to be precarious but this Boshhammer made it so easy. With the soft grip handle, the variable speed trigger and being able to go from forward to reverse with the flip of a switch it has made all my jobs much easier then expected. This is by far one of my new favorite tools. I have some broken tiles in our front entry that I think will be my next project. My rotary hammer came with a Hammer Drilling Dust Extraction Attachment that you can hook to a shop vac or to a specialty HEPA dust vacuum. I personally haven’t used it yet but I did open it to see exactly how it would work if need be. You basically hook a dust vac to it and it suctions itself to the wall and then you can drill holes through it without worrying about inhaling a bunch of cement dust. I can see where this would be extremely useful in a more industrial setting and anywhere you are going to be drilling a lot of holes in succession. This would definitely cut down if not eliminate the amount of dust a worker would be inhaling and in this day in age I can see the extreme health benefits of this item. If you are like me and have put off owning a rotary hammer drill for what ever reason I would put it off no longer. Tools like this make jobs that you might be dreading into something so easy you can’t understand why you put it off for so long. I know I’m going to be putting this to great use for years to come. Bosch makes a bunch of great tools and this is one more in their long line of great tools. If you need a rotary hammer for home use or industrial use it is perfect for both of them. This rotary hammer has several other great functions that I have copied from Bosch’s web site you might find useful.* Dust-extraction attachment optimized for drilling diameters from 5/8 in. to 1-3/8 in., accommodates up to 2-1/2 in. by removing brush ring* Vario-Lock chisel positioning rotates and locks chisel to optimize working angle* Works with Bosch PRO+GUARD dust solutions an end-to-end dust-collection system that helps users move toward OSHA Silica table 1 dust compliance* Variable-speed hammer trigger with reversing offers accurate bit starting* Attachment dust port fits Bosch 1-3/8 in. vacuum nozzle and can convert to 1-1/4 in./2 in. hose nozzles* Integral hammer clutch disengages torque transmission if the bit gets into a bind-up scenario* Bosch-exclusive rotating brush plate provides equal power in forward and reverse* Hammer Hook allows quick tool storage during the job

This tool will make drilling concrete, brick, etc. much easier for me. Over the years, I’ve often thought I sure could use a rotary hammer. I have a ½“ hammer drill which works for many drilling jobs, especially if I only need one or two shallow, smaller (1/4” or smaller) holes in the concrete slump block. But, when it comes to larger than ¼”, or deeper holes in concrete, the rotary hammer is much better. My sons are contractors and told me that, if was going to get a rotary hammer it should be a Bosch. When this Bosch 1” SDS-Plus Bulldog Xreme arrived, and after purchasing the bits, I had to drill a couple of ½” x 3” holes in the slab for a unistrut stand bracket to support a hose bib riser that I was always concerned about one of the grandkids, or even the dog, knocking over. I also have to drill a series of 1” x 4+” in preparation for demolition of the gunite swimming pool (40 lb. demolition hammer is NOT the way to go for this). This rotary hammer made quick and easy work out of the ½” holes, and I could see very quickly (after a couple of test holes) that it will certainly do the job of the 1” holes in the gunite. It is SDS-Plus which means I can use Plus or standard SDS bits. With the right bits it can also be used for chipping, scraping, etc. And, of course, it can be used for drilling without the hammer. It came in a sturdy case with good instructions, and includes the Bonus HDC 200 Dust Collector for anywhere dust may be an issue. The dust collector has dual suction which should hold it against the surface being drilled, while vacuuming the dust during drilling. Nice! About the only complaint is that the manual does not say what kind of grease to use or how to apply it to the bit holder/chuck, though it appears that it would be similar to a demolition hammer, but maybe a bit lower viscosity. That series of 1” holes is going to work it pretty hard and I’m sure I’d like to add grease periodically. Other than that, this is a fine tool that will likely outlast me.

This hammer drill is a BEAST! I am using it to drill 1/2 inch diameter holes in new concrete, and it performs that job with ease. The drill bit system is great, too, and I love the convenience of not having to use a chuck key to swap out drill bits. The specific drill bits for this drill are a little more expensive than the traditional bits ($10-15 apiece) but the convenience is well worth the extra cost, in my opinion. I hope to use this drill for years to come.
