When I picked up this hammer drill from Home Depot, it looked new all over–good sign–and I was not disappointed. I’ve done a lot of drilling in ceramic tile with a standard corded Makita drill–a perfectly good drill. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the Bosch Hammer drill attacked the tile sort of like a beast that was hard to restrain. The Bosch has way more power–variable speed, and selectable drilling modes: drill vs hammer. What I liked most about the Bosch was the infinitely variable chuck: the chuck will accept any size bit–be it ¼, 3/8, or ½ bit, and the chuck is manually cinched with a chuck key–my preference. I understand contractors need speed. I prefer the precision of a manual-tightened chuck that can accept any size bit in my tool box so I don’t have to stop and buy all new bits. So, I was able to finish my shower grab bar job in much faster time than using my standard corded drill alone. The 12-inch grab bar was drilled with six 3/16 inch holes into the tile and the studs. The 36-inch grab bar was drilled with four ¾ inch holes for Wingit anchors. Both grab bars are securely fastened to the tiled wall. Thank you Bosch!

I wanted to drill holes in some concrete steps to mount a handrail. The concrete is about 20 years old so getting pretty hard by now. The hammer drill worked really well, much easier than I expected. It went so well that I was able to surprise my wife with a new handrail when she came back home after a morning trip out! Lots of brownie points!

The drill is balanced and comfortable to use. I like the longer cord making it more convenient than hunting down an extension cord. The drill has plenty of power and I like the hammer drill, both functions operate perfectly. The drill has plenty of power (using a 6″ hole saw I needed the side handle due to the strong torque). The drill came with a depth gauge, chuck wrench, rotatable side handle and a nice case. The only potential problem is the side handle is difficult to tighten, having a rather small wing nut making it difficult to snug up.

I bought this tool to drill some weep holes in a concrete deck. It performed well enough for its design. I had to rent a roto hammer to complete the job. Am keeping it for normal drilling into concrete walls for fasteners and such.

Have yet to put this drill to test, but very pleased so far. Arrived in new condition with all parts, no sign of it being reconditioned. Have used it to mix bottom paint for boats and will be using it to drill pilot holes in pilings on pier to receive lag bolts. Rugged case is great for banging it takes around shop and in the back of work truck. For the torque it puts out, it’s a relatively light tool which will make holding sideways on floating dock much easier.
