Bosch GLL40-20G 40 ft. Self Leveling Cross Line Laser with VisiMax Green Beam – a Home Depot Seeds Program ReviewI really like using a laser level. I already had a single line, red laser level that I got when tiling a bathroom. I found very useful for lots of other things like straightening pictures, lining up hooks and checking door frames. I got this Bosch Self Leveling Cross line Green Laser (GLL40-20G). I’ve had a little opportunity to use it and compare it to my existing red laser. The Bosch Green Laser is MUCH brighter! I’m able to see the laser lines even in the brightest of lighting. I fins the red laser washes out in brighter light. Generally this isn’t a problem since what I’ checking is pretty close and the red laser is useful even in brighter light. Stretched out over a distance greater than 20 feet or so is a little more problematic for the red laser. The Bosch green laser is rated for 40 feet and it’s very readable in brighter light. This line, according to the documentation, is accurate to +/- 5/16” at 30 feet – plenty accurate for my needs. The Bosch is cross line laser so there is a horizontal and vertical line displayed simultaneously. This is really useful for checking a corner of, say a picture frame. It also means you can set it up and shoot vertical and horizontal layouts without moving the laser. My red laser is not easily mounted though it can be taped or tacked to another surface. It has a large, flat bottom surface that can be held easily to a corresponding flat surface. The Bosch Green Laser has a reasonably flat bottom surface as well. It also has a 1/4” tripod mount like that found on tripod for photographic use. The Bosch Laser also includes a very interesting mount that can be clamp to lots of things like boards, pipes, table and counter edges, etc. The laser can then be mounted to this clamp and used without holding it. I tried it with the laser and found it worked very well. I also found it worked better than “very well” for my camera since it allows me to mount the camera stably to almost any surface. Frankly, this mount will probably spend more time in my camera bag until needed for the laser level. The red laser has two bubble levels in it to verify level both vertically and horizontally. These bubble levels are very hard to read in low light but are very easy to make sure you’re shooting a level line across a wall or up a door frame but, since it’s handheld, you need to keep checking the bubbles for level. The Bosch laser is self leveling. Once mounted and turned on the cross lines will blink every few seconds and level the perfectly as long as the mounting is within about 4 degrees. If it keeps blinking you need to “eyeball” adjust the level until pretty close then the self leveling takes place and the blinking lines should stop. This works really well except that the laser level must mounted in the upright position and the mount must be at the height on the line you’re shooting. If, for example, you’re trying to layout nails six feet up for pictures on a wall, the mount must be high enough to show the horizontal line leveled and not blinking. You can certainly level the laser at a lower height then tilt it up to the level you need but the lines will start blinking which may be annoying. It also means that your mount or tripod must be good enough to allow dead straight up and down motion without any tilting left or right. The self leveling works in a handheld application, say on a wall, as long as you hold the level upright to the wall using the sides as reference but the surfaces on the sides are somewhat uneven and it feels awkward holding the sides to the wall while getting the self leveling correct. The Bosch Laser Level can be set to virtually any angle need for layout but you will have to deal with the blinking unless it’s upright and level. The Bosch Laser comes with a carrying bag that can be looped on your belt but there’s no room in the bag for the included mounting device. It’s pretty small and light – about the size of a tape measure. The ON/OFF switch is a little stiff but the reason is that the switch also locks the self leveling mechanism into place so it doesn’t get damaged. It doesn’t turn itself off automatically and will run until the two AA batteries – included – run out of power.I really like the Bosch Green Cross Line Laser. The cross lines are very bright and simultaneously run vertical and horizontal accurately. The self leveling is terrific and is far more accurate than me eyeballing a bubble level – especially in low light. I couldn’t find anything my red laser would do that the Bosch would not though the Bosch is best properly mounted on a tripod or other mount. The uneven side surfaces on the of the Bosch it make it a little more awkward to take advantage of the self leveling if handheld against a wall doing a quick check of level on a mounted picture. Squared sides that are perpendicular to the bottom of the level would be a good thing. Having the back squared and perpendicular would also extend it’s ease of use and versatility. The blinking every few seconds if the laser isn’t close enough to level for the self leveling mechanism to work may be annoying to some but I didn’t have a problem with it. The included batteries, great mount and bag are ice touches. Since this Bosch Laser Level does everything my red laser does and much more, I’ll probably be giving the red laser away and keep just the Bosch.

This level performs as expected. The spread of the laser is not as wide or deep as I needed it to be. I exchanged it for a different one that could shoot 180 degrees in both horizontal and vertical planes.

Definitely needs a tripod over the holding fixture it comes with. Otherwise it serves its purpose

I loved my old Bosch cross laser (not sure what model it was) but when it failed i picked this one up. I ended up returning it because the cone angle on the cross is too small! If youre going to use it for hanging pictures and shelves its going to be fine, in fact I’d give it 5 stars for that. But with the tight cone angle It drives you to need to be far away to get a long line. Ive had many cases with my old one where i was in a tight place but its much larger cone angle made that a nonissue. I’ll keep searching but sadly it doesnt appear they include that as a spec on most boxes.

It works, simple on/off. but the lacks the functionality of less expensive red laser models. Can not lock beam to use for angles, only projects foward and can not isolated horizontal and vertical lines. I returned it and picked up one online that projected 360 degree for less then $100.

Works well even in daylight without direct sun. I tried the 30’ red laser model and returned it as the red required near dusk conditions outside. I walked around my home setting a line 36” above the foundation for siding accent trim with about 12 tripod stations and closed the loop 1/4” off in 175’.

I work in a hospital and do alot of work in offices or patient rooms no bigger than 20×20 and this laser is more visible than my red 360 laser! Great for an interior professional or DIY’ER!Is this model compatible with a detector to increase the range? Thanks!

Easy to use, good visibility, I just use a lot of your batteries if you leave it on all the time

The Bosch Self Leveling Cross Line Laser was essential for aligning tiles in our shower remodel. Getting the first course of tiles lined up was impossible using a standard manual level. The green laser lines on all three walls of the shower resulted in perfect tile alignment.JJH

Definitely brighter than my red line lasers. Also runs thru batteries, 2 double a batteries new out of the package last 2 days. Over all good small laser to set door frames and cabinets with.

Green light is helpful and highly visible. Nice, compact size and mounts to a tripod as needed.

It doesn’t have the range needed for the price of the product. So its suppose the have 50 feet of distance but with in 10 feet the line fades and is not clear.

I have been a builder remodeler for 49 years, and as such I have many opportunities to use a tool like these 40 FT. SELF LEVELING CROSS LINE LASER WITH VISIMAX GREEN BEAM. This laser level is of high quality, and the green laser is the way to go. Green lasers are easier to see for a longer distance. Bosch tools are of good quality, I have many and they work very well. I use this primarily for setting cabinets, a job for which this level is well suited. And I like the mount tha can be clamped anywhere and pivots in different directions I highly recommend it.
