Looks can be deceiving. I thought this level was quite a bit smaller when I selected it. This is my second tool from Bosch and I have to say it was as well-built as I expected it to be. The packaging itself has much to be desired. The retail package was shipped in a non-descript corrugated box that didn’t really do much for protection. It seems mine was dropped HARD on the corner and it did a number to the packaging. After opening the box it seems there is a lot of empty space. Bosch filled it with smaller cardboard pieces but they don’t do much to keep things from banging around. All that being said, everything managed to survive and make it to me in one piece. The laser head is really heavy duty and looks like it can take a heck of a beating. The two grab handles are neat but probably over-engineered to be honest and they lend enough strength that you can pick it up along with the tripod and not wory. They do offer a measure of protection for the battery compartment lock and switch face. It uses two D batteries which are included. It has a pre-threaded hole to screw it in to the tripod base. If you don’t want to use the tripod the bottom is flat so you could just as easily set it down somewhere, or maybe clamp it to something. According to Bosch there should be three different power settings for the laser but I can’t figure out how to change them. I can’t find anything in the manual either, unless I’m just missing it.The tripod legs are very sturdy and stay planted great even on windy days. The locking levers that keep the legs extended are easy to open and close and a nylon carrying strap is attached that also serves to keep the legs from splaying. The bottoms of the tripod feet have rubbery tips and there are also what look like foot pegs. I don’t think you would want to use your foot to plant the tripod because it will damage the rubber tip(s). I’m not really sure what they are for. This kit includes a laser receiver which is a necessity for measuring longer distances. The human eye doesn’t have the sensitivity to be able to pick up the laser on any type of surface at 1000ft or more. It uses a 9v battery but I had some problems getting it working. I had to remove the battery and bend the two metal contacts out so they make better contact with the terminals. In my tests the receiver worked very well. As the laser approaches the center of the sensor it beeps faster and faster until it reaches a solid tone when the laser is at dead center. The beeping is VERY loud. Even outside it sounds loud. The beeping can be turned off though if desired. In the video I have my thumb over the speaker because of how ear piercing it can be indoors. There are two LCDs on the receiver. One on the front and one on the back. The rear LCD displays the same information as the one on the front so even if you’re standing behind the receiver you can still see the readings. There is also a small liquid level built into the receiver and into the arm that attaches it to the aluminum measuring stick.Bosch included an aluminum pole that extends to about 8ft and is designed to accept the laser receiver with it’s right angle mount. It aligns nicely so that the indicator on the mount corresponds to exactly where the laser is. If you need to make an accurate measurement of the laser’s height over a great distance, you can easily clamp the laser receiver to it and adjust as necessary. The pole is marked at 1/4″ intervals.Everything packs up nicely in a hard plastic case with a pre-cut styro-foam insert. Even the batteries have their own designated locations. As you can see from the pictures there are also some empty spots, you could probably stash a few things in.With the tripod legs fully extended and the laser head installed I’d estimate it stands about 6ft tall. As far as I can tell, there is no limit to how far the legs can be splayed. The included measuring stick that holds the receiver goes up to the 8ft mark. As far as laser intensity goes, don’t plan on seeing the beam 1300ft away on a sunny day even. That’s not how it’s designed to be used. I’d be surprised if you could see it any further than 30ft. However, that’s why this includes the laser receiver. I don’t have any place near me that allows for 1300ft line-of-sight to test the max range out but I was easily able to go 300ft away using the laser receiver and measuring stick. Granted, three hundred feet isn’t very fall at all for a tool advertised as 1300ft but it’s the best I can do in my area. Interestingly, the literature says this unit has a 1300ft range in some places and 1200ft in others. As far as the instructions go I feel like they are a little lacking. even though this is dead simple to operate I still don’t know how to adjust the laser’s power output.Indoors this thing works awesome. I can set it up in my living and shine a strong red beam on to every wall that is within line of sight. Even at 25ft away the line still maintains most of its focus. Judging by the construction I feel this would withstand many years on the job site.

Works very well. It is hard to see the lazer line but the receiving unit will tell you where you are and seem to be right on.

I have just received this item, I had a fence line I wanted to line out that is 1100 ft, so I bought this because it says 1300ft range. Come to find out, this is 1300ft Diameter. Meaning if this is in the middle, it goes 650ft in radius. I’m still keeping it, as I am going to use it for two foundations and other things, but I was disappointed it wasn’t clearer. As far as working and functionality, works great.

I used this to help a friend level out a gravel base pad for setting grain bins. The pad was about 200 feet across and was 1 1/2 feet low on one end. The tool worked perfectly and did exactly what needed to be done to level off the pad. The tool is simple and easy to understand. It self levels and made easy work of this job. While the description says it has 3 speeds, the manual that came with the tool says it only has one speed – 600 rpm which is indeed the case. Not a huge issue but worth noting.

Seems to work fine. I have not tested it or calibrated it, but each part seems to do its job. You have to use the receiver, as the beam is not visible in daylight. This tool makes it fairly easy to get your grade right.
