    This is the longest carbide bit I could find at a reasonable price. I need to drill through the coral rock to install an 8 ft. x 5/8″ground rod. I have a power hammer to drive it home but I need to drill a pilot hole to get it started. It fits just fine in my Milwaukee 1/2″hammer drill.

    I needed to dig some holes for a pole barn extension in clay & shale. While a chisel in an SDS hammer drill using chisel function works OK to get through the shale, chisels don’t seem to be available in sufficient length to dig the 12″ diameter hole to 36″ or so. Since I could only get to about 14″ with the chisel and a digging bar, I decided to try this Bosch 39″ x 3/4″ SDS Carbide Bit. The bit worked very well to get through the shale with multiple holes, and then breaking the rest with slamming it with the steel digging bar. I got all the holes to at least 31″ deep, and am quite pleased. On the earlier installation, I had previously tried a “tow-behind trailer mount” hydraulic hole digger, but it could not get through the shale. So while using this Bosch bit and the digging bar was a relatively slow process, it got the job done.
