Featuring laminating thermal transfer technology, the PT-E500 Industrial Handheld Labeling Tool from Brother will help you fill numerous labeling needs. It works with tape sizes from 3.5 to 24mm and it has a print resolution of 180 dpi for sharp text. Produce labels quickly while on-site thanks to the included rechargeable Li-ion battery and a speed of 0.8″ per second or 1.2″ per second when plugging into AC power. Further improving usage is the inclusion of a built-in automatic cutter, a QWERTY keyboard, and a large 15-character, 2-line backlit LCD.
A USB port is available for computer connectivity which works with the included design software to print from databases and make custom labels. Smart labeling application keys enable quick printing for specific applications, such as cabling, faceplates, patch panels, and more, and it has advanced serialized options. Additionally, it is compatible with a variety of HGe and TZE tapes along with the HSe heat shrink tubing that is smear resistant.

Great for standard labeling. Fairly rugged design that seems like it will hold up in an industrial setting. The screen is easy to read and programing in pretty intuitive. I’ve used it to label wiring and responder racks and has worked well for that application.

I had considered the DYMO Rhino product line but could not find what I wanted with QWERTY keyboard layout at a comparable price point. I’ve a colleague that uses an earlier model Brother label maker and it works very well. I’m happy with what I have in the Brother E500 and it works well in my shop and field service applications. I purchased the PT_E500 with the intention of using its PC connection however, having lived with it for some time, I’m not certain I’ll make good use of the interface. I say this because the handheld input process is quicker than I had anticipated. I’m a sucker for the black and orange color scheme which projected a robust, industrial build quality. Unfortunately perception and reality do not intersect. I’m not certain this unit would hold up to abuse in a hostile environment. i.e. being dropped and or kicked around. I’ve not identified the construction materials but it isn’t nylon 6/6. This is subjective on my part but I would like to see, and would pay for, a more robust set of materials used in construction. Many people complain about 1 of tape waste per label. It isn’t optimal but my work around is to print multiple labels at once and hand cut them. It is a process that works well for me as I typically print multiple labels at a time. The automatic tape cutter works but certainly not necessary for efficient use of the unit. Something I’ve not been able to get my head (and hands) around is layout of most handheld devices with keypad input. IMHO the keypad and screen should be reversed. Keypad at the top and screen at the bottom. This is a natural arrangement for holding the unit and text input. See attached pic. Good purchase and would recommend to others.

I bought this labeling tool primarily for labeling cables and also to print barcodes. I love it. I can connect it to my laptop using the supplied USB cable and then design labels using the Brother P-Touch software, or I can use it as a handheld labelmaker and type in the labels on the device itself. The battery is long lasting. The laminated tape is high quality. And I love the look and feel of the hard carrying case it came in. What a great product!

I can’t help but notice every time how much tape it wastes simply by the way it is designed. I suppose that’s one way how Brother makes their money but really it’s quite over the board and labels are definitely not cheap. Other than that, I like its features and the build. Battery life has been good so far.

Tried the PTE550W and found the chain/half-cut option very useful. Can this feature be enabled on the PTE500 please?
