The CineRAID CR-H218 2-Bay USB 3.1 Type-C Raid Enclosure converts your internal 2.5″ drives as an external USB storage solution so you can quickly provide additional storage space for your Windows and Mac systems. The enclosure comes with two drive bays that can accommodate your 2.5″ SATA-based SSDs and hard drives, which have a maximum height of 12.5mm. For safeguarding data or enhancing transfer rates, it is outfitted with a hardware RAID controller, letting you configure the drives in a RAID 0 or 1 array by using the onboard dip switches. Moreover, JBOD and Normal modes are available to create one large volume or two volumes.
CineRAID has armed the CR-H218 enclosure with a USB Type-C interface, which features a reversible design, so you can always connect the included USB Type-C to Type-A cable the first try. This connection is equipped with USB 3.1 technology that transfers data at a rate of up to 10 Gb/s. In addition to transferring data, the enclosure is powered via a USB bus-powered port on your computer.

Ive had this enclosure for more than a month. I started out with two 2TB Seagate HDDs. Very solid. I probably experienced two disconnects after one month of use when paired with my MacBook Pro 13 Touchbar (2017). Last week I was able to save enough enough scratch to buy two 2TB Crucial SSDs. I had a ton of problems with the enclosure at that point with the drive dropping connection and producing a red LED after multiple unsuccessful large file transfers. I contacted CineRAID support via email with no response. Decided to call after 4 days and was helped by a pretty good support tech. With the issue unresolved I decided to give it another shot. Turned out that the CineRAID/SSD combo is fine in RAID0 by using a different port in my computer setup. I dont know if it was the cable, the Caldigit dock I use, or time for the computer gremlins to be driven away from my CineRAID, but it works now. Im getting ~700+MB/~900MB Write/Read. Very happy with the enclosure. I still want an enclosure that is small and light weight as possible. After googling and browsing, I havent been able to find a smaller bus powered, RAID enclosure that works with 2.5 drives on the market. If the height of the unit was shorter and if it werent for the few disconnects, I would have given this 5 stars. Also the pic of the the rubber cage to make the enclosure ruggard (on their website) can not be purchased separately-makes me depressed.

Finally received my new Macbook pro so I can use the USB-C connection. After anxiously waiting to test my new toys, I added 2x Sandisk x400 SSDs that I already had, then stripped them together using this enclosure. I’m seeing well over 800+ MB/s!!! No morewaiting long periods for my work to transfer! Enclosure has a very solid feel, built in all aluminum. USB-C cable was included with an adapter so I can use it with the older USB port. I’m new to the CineRAID products, but you just made a happy customer from me.

Generally speaking, just a substandard product with subpar performance. Using SATA III 6G, 500GB SSDs, Black Magic, AJA, etc read/write speeds on average are abysmal, with average write speeds in the 220 – 320 MB/s range (320 MB/s on the VERY high end, very rare, infrequent). Other bus-powered enclosures average 370 (very rare!) – 470 MB/s write speeds for the same drives, using the same USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectivity. We have these connected to Apple Thunderbolt 3 (TB 3) to Apple Thunderbolt 2 (TB 2) cables, to Apple TB 2 host ports. Now, CineRAID could counter that these are not intended to be used with TB 2 host ports, however and again, other enclosures with the same connectivity configurations communicate fine with the Apples thru’ the same TB 2 host ports. CineRAID could also counter (and has replied to us) that to use these enclosures with TB 2 host ports, an external 5V power supply (optional) might be (is) required. However, therein lies an issue pointing to yet another problem…poor or, just simply, LACK of customer support. We have sent CineRAID numerous emails asking WHERE on the CineRAID site those optional 5V power adapter/supplies can be located and/or purchased. The results? Nothing, not a word, spanning a 3 week period of time. This group (CineRAID) is terrible at responding to something as basic, as simple as inquiries asking where to purchase the external power adapters/supplies listed as available options on this item’s description on the CineRAID site. So, as other users have commented on, how can users rely on CineRAID for even slightly more complicated technical or warranty support? Fortunately, we only paid $55 (+ tax) each for these and became aware of the lack of customer support before recommending these to all of our customers. For alternative solutions, we’ll just stay with OWC despite OWC’s also well-known poor support. While OWC may also be very poor with communications and support, that communication and support is still far superior to this CineRAID group. Further, B&H will serve as a support buffer filling in any possible communications gaps with OWC. Conversely and as a final note, thanks to B&H Photo for recommending universal power adapters (BH Item No/SKU: CYCPAC1U1300) compatible with these enclosures, a very SINCERE thanks. The few customers we initially recommended these boxes to thanked us for the power adapter referrals. We told them to thank B&H, THEY’RE the ones who did what CineRAID SHOULD have done. So, again, thank you B&H from us as well as those customers!

Bought this in December of 2020. Started having issues with it in May of 2021. I did get a replacement (So-called replacement). It still has the same issue before I sent the enclosure to the company.

This is a neat little box, but because I tried to use it with 2 SSDs on a Mac Pro (without USB 3.1 Gen 2 port), I was only able to achieve speeds of 300-400MBps. Called customer service (who seemed very nice and helpful) and was told that this was because the two hard drives have to share the bus. I’m told that using it on a new MacBook Pro or other computer with USB 3.1 Gen 2 port (Thunderbolt 3) would yield speeds of 600-700MBps, but obviously did not have the ability to test this. I hope they keep making these, because it’s a cool, compact package. It would be nice to have a Thunderbolt version.

I added 2x Sandisk 480GB SSD drives in RAID 0 and gives me about 800+ MB/s read speeds! I take this along to all my location sites and able to work on projects without any lag. Construction is very durable, all aluminum and very easy to install drives in it. Will be buying a second one soon.

I use this raid for mobile video editing. I has great speed even with usb 3.0 and the option to get even higher speeds with the USB-C connection. This raid is bus powered and has the option of adding an additional 5v usb power for higher power drives. Overall solid enclosure.
