Little or no focusing spot. Good for wide area, very short distance.

Wonderful tool, strong, waterproof, illuminates very well with an adjustable brightness. Lifetime warranty is also a great benefit and my warranty claim was honoured with no hassle. Would definitely purchase more products from COAST.

The light was unbelievably strong for the size of the light. Lit up a huge area on the wide setting and the spot gave a direct light on objects a good distance away. Very pleased with this purchase and would recommend.

I use the polysteel 400 almost everyday for hunting working on my truck or just looking for something in the dark.

The PS400 is a tremendous value, providing an enormous amount of light for not much money.I have four or five of these lights lying around the house. I bought most of them for cheap during promotions or sales, but even at full price I think they’re a bargain for the durability and performance they provide. The rubberized barrel makes them very comfortable to carry in cold weather, and very secure to carry with sweaty or rainy hands. And it has a hole in the tailcap where you can thread a lanyard for greater safety and control. The PS400 has three power settings; I tend to use the middle one most. Many LED lights offer high outputs that attract consumer attention but that are overkill for most purposes and drain batteries quickly. Having a well-chosen range of output intensities, as the PS400 does, allows you to dial back the power to more reasonable and sustainable levels that are adequate to the task and prolong battery life. The focusing system on the PS400 works well, with a wide working range from room-filling flood to tightly focused spot. The latter works extremely well, extending the reach of the light beyond that of other flashlights I own that have higher output but less powerful lenses. That said, as a lower-end light, the PS400 does not project the highly uniform light that Coast’s “Pure Beam” products do. While the light at the near and far settings on the PS400 is reasonably even, at focal lengths in between you will see hot spots, shadowy areas and banding. Often, I can move these artifacts to a less important part of what I’m looking at just by zooming in or out a little, so this is definitely not a deal breaker for a general purpose light. But this is not a light I would use for critical inspections, where uneven lighting might fool me into thinking the object I’m inspecting is damaged or leaking.A more annoying fault of this light is the twist-focus mechanism, which requires the use of both hands — one to hold the barrel while the other twists the lens. In situations where your hands are full already, this could be a major annoyance or safety hazard.I also find that the mechanism tends to seize up and resist turning when the light hasn’t been used in a while, or when the focus is twisted too hard to either extreme. While I’ve never had an occasion where I couldn’t break it loose and get it to turn, there have been times when the stubbornness of the seizure was starting to make me wonder. This might be something to consider if you have diminished strength in your hands from injury or orthopedic issues.I’ve noticed the same tendency to seize in other PolySteel series flashlights I own. It appears to be a ubiquitous characteristic of the mechanism used throughout the entire product line rather than a flaw specific to a particular model. For younger users with abundant strength and dexterity, it’s probably not an issue.Coast offers variations of this light in other configurations, light outputs, etc. I have a few of these, and they all work pretty much the same. For me, the PS400 offers the best combination of high output in a small package. That’s why I’ve got a bunch of these lights scattered about the house.

I bought today the model 400 & no where on the packaging does it mention how to get High/ Medium/ Low beam of light. This should be added to the packaging. I found it by reading online the reviews (that’s not the way to find operating instructions)

Feels good in the hand. Plenty of light. Batteries have lasted longer than I thought.

Used the first one about 5 years and it always worked great. Then it just stopped working. I bought a new identical one. When I tried the battery holder in the old light it worked just as good as new. I put the batteries in the old holder and neither light worked. When I filed a claim with the manufacturer, they sent our a new one without any hassle.

I had a friend that had a coast flashlight and was impressed enough that I went out and bought one for myself.Since then I’ve bought 2 more and a headlamp. After 3 years of abusive use the first one I purchased quit working.A call to customer service and a new one arrived in less than a week. The lady in customer service was outstanding.Polite and seemed as if I was her number one priority.Their warranty is just what they claim. It reminds me of Leupold optics customer service and warranty.Absolutely first rate. From my experience I’d buy coast products without hesitation !

Bought the double pack about a year ago. One for work and one for home. At work I abuse the flashlight and even use it as a hammer or a screwdriver and it still works every time. The only thing that I find myself fixing is the plastic locking O-ring that holds the lens comes loose often. Even the one I have at home has the same issue. That and finding a sheath that fits it. I bought a pepper spray holder that kinda works. Wanna buy the rechargeable battery because it eats up batteries like no other.

I am a Realtor and I need a flashlight that is easy to operate, bright enough for me to see in dark corners, and small enough to carry in one hand.

Sturdy flashlight with great power. I would have given it s 5 but the on/off button is very stiff and hard to depress.
