Protect and expand storage on your Sony PS4, Microsoft Xbox One, Apple iPad Pro (2018), and Android device with the Crucial 2TB X8 External USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C Solid-State Drive.
The Crucial X8 External SSD features a unibody core of anodized aluminum, which not only look and feel great, but also can dissipate heat efficiently for maximum performance. The design is also durable, rugged, and compact. Tested against extreme temperatures, shock, vibration, and even a 7.5′ drop, the X8 SSD can withstand the elements. Speaking of performance, the X8 SSD can reach up to 1050 MB/s read speeds.
The X8 SSD comes preformatted with exFAT, so it will work with both Windows and Mac computers. You can also reformat if needed. Just make sure you back up your data before you do since reformatting will wipe your X8 SSD clean. The X8 SSD features a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, so you can use it with other compatible devices.

What an easy awesome way to turn a 256 gb into a a 1.256 iPad! I love it and so much better than a SD card in my OTG connection like I was doing before!

This is the 4th or 5th Crucial SSD I own; they all perform as expected – a little warm after some use but obviously quicker than spinning disks. The X8 is notably faster than the X6 Crucial SSDs I own – so I use this as my external hard drive (it replaced a RAID I’ve had for over 6 years so it was about time) – I use the X6 models for backing up. And, of course, backing up is still necessary since, despite the modern myth that SSSDs have no moving parts and therefor do not fail – they can. Otherwise, my Crucial SSDs have been stored at various temperatures, dropped on occasion (not on purpose, but life happens) and whatnot – to no ill effect.

The X8 SSD is advertised to reach speeds of up to 1050 MB/s connected via the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port. This may be true for the first 5 min (or less) of a large transfer but the speed then drops terribly. I transferred 1.88 TB to a new Crucial X8 formatted as APFS ; it said it would take about 35 minutes. After 5 minutes of transfer, the estimate kept climbing to about 4 hours. It took that long for the transfer. Technically, Crucial was correct in saying the speeds can reach 1050 MB/s but this is very misleading. I’ve used Samsung 4TB drives in the past which all performed at rated speeds throughout large transfers. I thought I’d save a little money but you get what you pay for I guess. Very disappointing! I think Crucial uses slower memory for the bulk of the 4TB. I’m returning this unit and buying a Samsung 870. However I did not have any overheating problems as others have mentioned in their review.

It’s amazing how much data can fit on such a small device. It’s a great size for being portable, but not so small that it’s difficult to hold. It’s the perfect size to store away easily but holds so many photos for me. I’m still filling it up!

It’s a really fast SSD

The numbers… 300 MB/s for a few GB, then 50-60 MB/S, not so exciting. activate the momentum cache and you get 800 Mb/s for about 10 seconds. Then it tanks and stays. The picture is with the MC enabled, which is only useful if all your files are under 1 GB and you only plan to move one at a time.

Used this as an upgraded backup transfer drive to carry around and for large video editing projects. The transfer speed is amazing coming from a first gen samsung USB-C drive. Moreover, I love the build quality of the drive, solid, feels great in the hand, and never got too hot during my file transfers. Did I mention it was fast? No complaints, only file transfer nirvana. Plus, I got it at a great deal, less than $400 for 4 TB? Thank you B&H.

I really like this storage drive–it’s small, so it doesn’t take up valuable desk space; it’s lightweight, so it’s easy to move and carry around; it’s pretty quick. I’ve been using it for a few months with no problems. The only reason I don’t give it 5 stars is that there are no other types of cables, so it’s limited to 1G maximum. A Thunderbolt 4 should have been included; at the least, I think it should have been sold with a few adapters to make it compatible with different ports, as Apple has made it difficult and expensive to use ancillaries. And, as part 2 of the same issue, the cable should have been longer. I still like the unit and will buy more when the price comes down.
