The upgrade was quite easy to install. Just power down your iMac, unplug the power cable, and release memory cover by pressing release button that is visible once power plug is removed. There are then 2 levers to lower the memory tray. Handle the memory modules by the edges and you should have no problems. There are several YouTube videos that provide detailed instructions. The upgrade is fully compatible with the Apple 8GB memory (2 x 4GB modules) delivered with a standard Retina 5k iMac. Increased memory to 24GB which provided much improved performance with Lightroom CC (photo merge in particular).

Bought this pair to upgrade my laptop from 16 to 32 GB of memory. Simple to install, and now my computer is super fast! Don’t be fooled by the product name (Mac). These cards work in my Windows machine – they are just specially tested and certified for use in Macs, as required by Apple.

Replaced the original Synology DDR3 1600 2GB CL11 1.5V RAM in the internal slot with this Crucial DDR3L 1600 1.35V CL11 RAM. Everything works as expected. I am considering buying another one to expand in the external slot. A small gotcha: originally I installed this 1.35V new RAM in the external slot, only to find that the system did not boot. Soon I realized that the original RAM was of 1.5V voltage and all RAMs had to be on the same voltage.

I am an average user – don’t do heavy graphics, or use heavy applications, but I do have many apps running at the same. I didn’t think that for what I do I needed more memory. Turns out I was very wrong. Follow Apple’s instructions for IMacs from Late 2012 or later – easy 5 minute start to finish, and makes a huge difference. Now I have 24 GB and my IMac using 12GB on average. 8GB were clearly not enough. Totally worth it. Had no problem mixing these with the Apple stock 2x4GB.
