As its name implies, the 4Q Smart Mechanical Keyboard from Das Keyboard is a cloud-connected device designed to improve your productivity. With the Q-Software, you’ll be able to customize its RGB lighting as well as create your own color-coded, notification-based alerts that are displayed right on the keyboard, supporting up to 16.8 million colors. This means that instead of checking your phone for social media alerts, weather updates, stocks status, and more, you can simply look down at your keyboard. Aside from these smart features, the 4Q is built with Cherry MX Brown RGB switches, which provide you with a soft tactile typing experience. For your convenience, it has a built-in, two-port USB 2.0 hub as well as dedicated media controls. Included with the 4Q is a footbar that raises the keyboard and also doubles as a ruler.

I really like the feel and features of the keyboard but the Q software is poorly designed in my opinion. Yes you have different lighting options and can even create your own, but the keyboard has to connect to the Das Keyboards server to retrieve your lighting profile. While my system is booting up the keyboard is in its default lighting multi-color configuration, the lighting remains this way for sometimes over five minutes after the system is up. Then finally the lighting will change to my custom setup. There is no apparent way to expedite this process or to force it to happen by brining up the Q software and re-selecting my custom setup. In my opinion there should be a way to set the keyboards default lighting to whatever the user wants so that your setup happens upon power up, having something like keyboard lighting dependent on a server connection seems wrong to me.
