The soft rubber holder slides quite a bit obstructing the actual chisel top from been hit directly with the sledge hammer.

The protector saved my hands so many times. I used this to remove tile from bathroom floor, about 100 sq ft. It did the job. It would eat to the tile as fast as i could hammer. Beating on it with a 24 oz hammer did nothing to the strike zone except remove some paint.
