This square oven dish is a welcome addition to my Denby collection. I immediately set out to prepare a casserole and try out the new dish. The food cooked evenly and was a success. My guest admired the attractive dish. I was concerned about the clean up as the receipe left a crusty mess but to my surprise it was a easy wash that I did by hand. Next time will be in the dishwasher.

Some people think pottery isn’t durable, but they should check out this square oven dish from Denby’s. In addition to being durable enough to handle high oven temps, its beauty shines through in the simplicity of the design as much as in the shaded color wash on the sides. The manufacturer says that this can go from the freezer to the oven. I’ve never seen cookware that can do that reliably…that is, without taking so much of a beating that you are afraid it will break. Because it’s so durable, this dish is going to be a huge bonus for setting up a meal on the weekend for later in the week. I’ll layer food into this and pop it into the freezer until I need it. At first, I didn’t like the fact that there aren’t any handles on this. It made pulling it out of the oven to check on the progress of the food more difficult. I felt like I didn’t have a good enough grip on the dish. Then I realized that, with the ability to go from freezer to oven, it’s better not to have handles. The handles would take up too much space in the freezer. The dish is small enough that I can manage without handles because of that bonus. Attached are two pics. One is of the apple and carrot bake made with golden currents and Georgian dry spices before cooking, the other is after cooking. The dish had exactly as much liquid after as during the start because the pottery heats evenly.
