I’m an electrical contractor in Eastern Shore Maryland. I own three of these stud and joist drills.Features I like are the high and low speed clutch. This enables you to use the drill on a ladder with much better safety than the old electric right angle drills.

The DeWALT 3/4″ Cordless High Torque Impact Wrench is heavy duty. This is a bare tool but can be bought with a 5ah battery, however it works with any of your 20 Volt Max batteries. The 3/4 inch connection comes with a hog ring to ensure sockets stay securely attached. When serious fastening is required, it can deliver 700 ft. lbs. of MAX torque and 1,200 ft. lbs. of MAX breakaway torque. This wrench without the battery weighs 6.4lbs. It is very well made and rated to withstand a 6-8 ft. drop. It has an integrated LED to give you great visibility to your work. If you need the power and torque this delivers this a great option.

I was told this drill would chew through wood like a beaver, and it does. It’s outrageously expensive, but has proven to be worth every penny.

You put up a perfectly good stick of wood (stud, joist) and then you have to run a pipe or wire through it. Plumbers need a few very large holes. Electricians need smaller holes but sometimes an awful lot of them. When I built a new living room I started wiring with a plain 3/8″ corded drill. Real quick I dropped that and went over to borrow George’s Big Drill. The savings in time and strain more than justify a Big Drill when there’s a lot of good-size holes to make. This DeWalt cordless big-hole drill invites comparison with a long-time favorite tool, the Hole-Hawg®. The HH has been around 40 years for good reason- it does the job handily. IF you have power. Out here in the woods (or building a new home), power can be scarce. That’s where you want the DeWalt Stud and Joist Drill– cordless! In my tests, this DeWalt S&J cordless drill easily handled my largest bits. It feels like it has just as much Power as the corded HH drill. And maybe better controlled, with both electric and mechanical clutches which release when you get the bit impossibly jammed. You still have to hold it like a panicked pig, it is powerful! But it is less likely to get away from you. A series of holes which would have depleted lesser battery drills did not seem to drain the DeWalt’s battery enough to notice. They claim a lot of holes per charge, and I believe your arms will be awful tired before the drill runs down. The included charger is a lightweight monster (even has a fan!) and re-fills the battery quickly. The classic HH was all-metal. This DeWalt’s case is heavy plastic, and even so it weighs about a pound more. This suggests the motor is VERY generously designed. Indeed as you handle it, it is “all about the motor”. Lot of mass right there. Which is the key point of a tool like this. Nevertheless the plastic case is generously curved and ribbed, and I’ll expect it to survive most job-site use and abuse for a very long time. Two gears for two RPM speeds and more torque when needed. Dandy worklight shows where you are drilling, and stays on for a while after. Charger is very smart, knows when you need a top-off or a full charge, what the temperature is, and when the battery is full. Yes the fan shuts-off when charge is done. Nice carrying bag to hold the drill, battery, charger, and manual. My small nitpick is that the bag is snug, could be an inch longer.

This is the drill I have been searching for. I am an electrical contractor. I have drilled complete new construction roughs with only changing battery once. No wrist rockers thanks to the e clutch. And no batteries stopping for safe after 5 holes like the cordless hole hawg. a must buy time saver.

I was using once and i fell in love due to the easy make a 3″ hole on a 6″ X 9″ post and with the same battery charge was able to do another 2 1/4″ hole then I need to drill at the edge of the stair step, just on the edge not even the half of the hub at drill bit and was to easy without problems, 100% recommended.

This drill is as powerful as old school Milwaukee hole hawg. I am an electrician and I can drill out an entire 1800 sq ft. House on 2 batteries. Batteries take about 1/2 hour to charge. Never going back to using a corded one!
