Tool Connect appears to be overkill for the average DIYer. Tool Connect for inventory makes very little sense for the homeowner other than as a novelty and which does not include a GPS function. Therefore, I still can’t locate the drill if I place it down somewhere or have not put it back where it is stored. The Tool Connect general location feature might be useful if I loan out my drill but that is something I do not do. The online diagnostics are little more than telling me the charge of the battery. For Tool Connect you need to download the app to access the features and to place in inventory for the online portal. The app looked great at first sight and I easily connected my drill. I had instant access to the Instruction Manual which told me what I already knew and was identical to the paper manual. Within minutes I got a message that my tool was not in range – it was sitting on my lap as I viewed my iphone. I was unable to get the app to recognize the tool for many minutes. The apps identify button did not locate the drill. The app and the DeWalt website did not provide the answers to my troubleshooting connection question. DeWalt Chat is available M-F 8-5 and of course my trouble was on a Sunday. By luck I changed the battery pack and the app recognized my tool – reinserting the original battery maintained the connection. Ongoing the app intermittently loses connection for a short period but it does reconnect by itself and is most often functioning. Perhaps the app is more the problem than the drill. The power in this drill is super and will be a great asset with my projects – this is the main reason for a 20v drill is it not. I can turn off or on and adjust the brightness of the spotlight with the button on the top of the base. The enhanced battery features are very helpful. On the back of the battery is a button to push to determine the charge of the battery. Helpful before you get to the other side of your house or offsite and find you battery half-dead. I found that the two motor settings for drilling and inserting screws were very effective. Using a high torque setting allowed me to quickly and cleanly screw into solid oak. Using a lower setting prevented damage to soft wood while inserting wood screws. I had to research use of the settings on the internet as the manual provided did not provide sufficient information on their use. I did find that the bits would sometimes fall out of the drill during use which is the same problem I had with my last DeWalt drill. I am disappointed that the drill did not include a quick connect chuck or any bits. Changing from drill to screw bits was time consuming since I had to be sure that I had heavily tightened the chuck so the drill or bit would not fall out. I decided to add a quick connect extension to solve this problem of quick change between drill and bits. The drill I received came with an optional belt hook already attached which as a small woman may be of little use to me due to the weight of the drill. I received my tool in a hard case and would have preferred a soft bag as pictured. The drill does not have the optional bit holder or bit clip as the Instruction Manual pictured. I especially like a drill to have a bit holder/clip so I plan to purchase that accessory. I have found them online for about $10 with shipping on various websites but not on the Home Depot website. My recommendation is mixed and depends on the buyer classification. I give the drill itself and the batteries a 5 for power, torque setting, battery level assessment and light. I give the whole Tool Connect package a 3 for its questionable usefulness for the average DIYer, the intermittent connection issue and the apps minimum battery diagnostic functions offered. The added cost of the Tool Connect system is just not something I would recommend for a DIYer but if you are a large contractor company this may be for you. The drill functions are excellent. This is a great drill which will drill up a storm yet with a connection function which is of little value addition to me as a DIYer.

I purchased mine after learning the hard way! Nobody tells you there are two grades: household consumer & Professional. DeWalt is used by pros who run it 10 hours a day. The other, cheaper brands are intended for use once every 3 months. Don’t waste your money on a brand that won’t last!

This is perhaps the best cordless tool I’ve owned due to its incredible power in such a compact unit. The center of gravity is perfect making it an extremely well balanced tool in use. The LED does a good job of lighting the work area in front of the bit as well. Battery life is excellent, thanks to the brushless motor. Great value!
