No need to drill a pilot hole. These “Pilot Point” bits go thru steel like a hot knife thru butter. (Unfortunate review auto-title cut-off point.) I’ve drilled dozens of 1/2″ holes thru steel angle iron and the bit is still sharp. As with any drill bit drilling thru metal, be sure to use a proper cutting fluid and use enough to keep the bit temperature low.
