This DeWalt 17 inch power ship auger bit is a beast. My first thought after unpacking it was “Wow, I’ve had cars with camshafts lighter than this.” It might be slight overkill for my needs – I needed the length for reach more than for actual hole depth. But that’s fine, I’d prefer to over-tool rather than get caught breaking something cheap. The screw tip is great for keeping the drill from walking. The first thing I did was roll it on a flat surface to check for straightness; it passed with flying colors. Any appreciable bend in a 17″ bit of this circumference would be unmanageable.

The Dewalt 7/8 inch X 17 inch power ship auger bit is a great auger bit for drilling deep holes needed to run electrical cables and copper or plastic water pipes. The long bit makes it easier to cut through multiple floor and wall joists where two or three beams are between floors. The self feed spur tip makes starting holes easier and more accurate. Dual cutting edges make cutting easier and help move wood chips out the deep flutes on the bit. It’s never a good idea to hit a nail when drilling if possible but this bit is durable enough to be used in nail embedded wood. A heavy duty 1/2 inch drill is almost a necessity as this bit really grabs into the wood and moves quickly. The hex shaped shank on the bit locks easily on to the drill chuck and wont slip under heavy loads. You can feel the high torque as it cuts and a two handled drill would be recommended. I have used similar types of long drills, both regular drills and spade bits but this auger type is the easiest and quickest way to get the job done. I expect this drill bit to last a long time.

This 7/8” X 17 inch Dewalt power ship auger bit is designed for professional contractors who need to drill large deep holes quickly and cleanly. This industrial duty auger bit features screw point tips for a quick start and increased control and the deep flutes keep the hole clean of chips and saw dust. Believe me when I say that if your job or project requires large and deep holes in wood and you don’t have one of these bits, you need to obtain one, I have used “ ship auger bits” for over 50 years and there is still no tool made that will do the job better or safer than a ship auger, and it pays to always buy a quality tool made by a quality company and DEWALT certainly meets that criteria.

I got a powerful right angle drill, and needed some quality bits for it. I already have numerous Hole Saw bits (which are great for shallow holes), and Spade bits (which are good for medium depth holes), but only one Ship Auger bit (which is great for deep holes). I am restoring an old Colonial home, with 6″ to 8″ hand hewn timbers, which I need to drill for BX / Metal Clad wiring and PEX (new plumbing and for radiant heat). My 1″ Ship Auger would work for all of them, but I want to have the smallest hole possible. The 7/8″ needs a powerful drill. My smaller ones easily get bogged down. 3/4″ PEX fits the hole (see pic), but it is tight. Would be difficult to pull long runs. The screw tip, works great. It helps start the bit and prevents the bit from walking away from where you want it. The deep troughs lift the saw dusts and chip away (see pic). These are not cheap, but I figure if I do not hit any nails (fingers crossed, when drilling very old wood), they should last for years. The packaging implies they will cut through nails, but I will try not to test that. Made in Brazil.

I got this thinking I would piece two short cedar fence post together with 2’ pieces of #7 rebar (inserted 1’ on each side)… well, my approach using this power ship auger bit to do it is not going to work. While the tip did a nice job of pulling the bit into the material initially, it required more pressure than I could deliver to get it to drill the full length of the bit. And pressure should be minimal since the bit is supposed to do heavy lifting. Even if I had applied maximum pressure, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish the task in a reasonable amount of time. Back to the drawing board on this project. While this bit wasn’t the right tool for my application, this bit worked fine with pine when drilling holes in beams for running Romex, conduit, and plumbing. Just keep in mind that a 17” bit is a lot of bit… so not for use if there’s limited space. Just a few things worth noting… Ship auger bits should be run at low speeds (0-600 RPM). Also, I’m glad I checked my drill specifications since 7/8” is the maximum recommended capacity for my DeWalt 20V max compact drill/driver/hammerdrill (DCD795). I have a drill by a different brand rated to handle 1” ship auger bits but it didn’t perform as well as my DeWalt drill, which is rated for 7/8″ max. Batteries can run down quickly as well depending on the type of wood. I didn’t have to go through nails, so I can’t speak to how well it lives up to that claim.I decent bit when used in the correct application. I’m just not using it for what I’d initially planned.

This drill bits is very good for made holes on wood studs

Never end up using it but packaging and sturdiness seemed appropriate.
