Worked great for drilling holes in a tree stump to prepare it for stump remover. Much better than a spade bit for this purpose.

Drill bit is made well and does the job. I use this auger bit to drill down into hard pack coquina in our Florida campsites so I can put up tiki torches. The 1 inch diameter is the perfect size to fit the bamboo pole for a tiki torch. A lot of times the ground is too hard to just stick in the torch, these make the perfect holes. It is made with extra deep flutes the quickly move the dirt from the hole and prevent clogging. The edges are also very sharp and it has a ball groove shank which makes for quick bit changes.

Used mine to power through tree stumps—no problem.

Sharp, quick cutting, and fairly priced. This bit is very helpful when doing electrical rough-in. The 17 inch length gives you 11 inches of fluted bit, which is especially helpful when drilling through large timbers. It is quick to start and cuts aggressively. Although there is no mention about its ability to handle nail embedded wood on the website the packaging mentions “durable tip”. The competition, the Diablo bit (HD # 313022196 ) specifically mentions nail embedded wood. I did not test this claim. The 7/16” shank makes it a great companion to the new quick-lok chucks that are coming on right angle drills these days (see video below). It is priced at $27 which puts it a few bucks cheaper than the Diablo. It was a good performer on the job and I give it a B+ rating.

This 1″ auger bit is impressive. The overall length is 17.25″. The spiral auger portion is 11″ long and the shank is 5.5″ long. It weighs 22 oz. The screw point tip is 3/4″ long and 1/4″ thick at the base – beefy enough that it should hold up to repeated use. The 7/16 grooved hex shank can be used in a regular 1/2″ chuck or with a quick-release chuck. The clear plastic slip case has multiple click notches to adjust the length for a secure fit to protect this bit.It drilled a clean 1″ hole while ejecting a pile of 1/4″ chips.I don’t recommend this but I accidentally dropped it tip down on a concrete floor and the pointed screw tip was still fine. There’s no mention of what RPM to use this bit at but my chart says suggests 525 RPM. The drill is made in Brazil.

This 1 inch by 17 inch auger bit is really made well, and will keep powering through studs to make a clean 1 inch hole for years to come! I was impressed by the extra deep flutes in the bit barrel which will allow the wood to clear the bit quickly. The tip is well-formed and the screw threads are perfect for quickly starting a hole. I keep this bit in the provided clear sliding case so I can find it easily. This is a really high quality bit, and I highly recommend it!

This ship auger is better quality than its price suggests. I know they are not cheap but this bit cuts clean, doesn’t slow down on nails, and maintains an edge for quite a long time. I didn’t think it would perform as good as my Diablo’s but so far it has. More time is needed.I cringe when I see people complain about ship augers. Most were not used properly. Especially bits larger than 1/2″, the speed needs to be kept slow – no more than 600RPMs. Hardwoods need even slower speeds. Take care of these expensive bits and they will provide long service. My only grip is the case is not have a lid I can remove and attach like Diablo’s ship auger bitsIrwin seems to have slipped on quality, these DeWalt’s are as good if not better than the older ones.
