The Dewalt 1-1/16 inch x 17 inch power ship auger bit is super heavy duty. We needed a bit this size but we actually had to purchase a 1/2 inch drill/driver, sometimes called a hammer drill, because we didn’t have a drill that would accommodate its larger size. It has a screw-point tip to make starting the hole easy. It definitely drills large holes quickly and cleanly. The bit itself is heavy and solid.

This 1 1/16” X 17 inch long Dewalt power ship auger is designed for professional contractor who needs a tool to drill large, deep holes quickly and cleanly. This industrial duty auger features a screw-point tip for a quick start and increased control, it also features extra deep flutes for fast removal of chips and saw dust which is always a “pain” if your bit is not so equipped. I have used ship auger bits for over fifty years wiring houses for elec, cable, cat and tv and etc. and there is not a better tool made than a ship auger for those type jobs and it always pay to buy a quality tool from a quality company and Dewalt certainly meets that criteria.

Good things about this auger bit is that it has a screw tip which will help get the hole started. It looks like it is well made and it is nice and sharp. It also fits into my regular sized drill. Because this is an auger drill bit it is very efficient at pulling out the drilled wood. It is also very aggressive so hold on to it tightly in tough wood. With this drill you can drill a hole about 14” deep.I just made a frame to raise a desk to be a standing desk. I had to drill a hole that was at least 1” in diameter. Unfortunately, I only had a hole saw the right size at the time. These work well except they don’t work for blind holes which is what I needed. I therefore had to make each leg support out of two pieces, so that I could drill a through hole and then connect the pieces back together. If I had this drill bit before, it would have been easier because I could have just drilled a blind hole. Also, this will be good next time I need to drill a hole all the way through a large piece of wood.

This 1 1/8-inch Dewalt Ship Auger is a real high-quality professional grade tool. Wish I had this when I was making lamp posts from pressure treated 6 by 6’s a few years back. I made three of them using a spade bit and extensions and it was slow work to get the chips out of the hole an inch or so at a time. This bit powers in and pumps the chips out like drilling through butter. Once the end of the scroll goes into the hole, about 13 inches in, the totally free of chips feature does stop and you need to move ahead in steps clearing chips at about 3-inch intervals. So, you can actually bury the full bit and retrieve it, about 16 inches in a single run in about 15 seconds going with the grain. I have a dock rehab project upcoming and this tool will be a big asset. The reusable slip case will keep it away from other tools when not in use.

This auger bit is meant mostly for construction work, but we also used it for some initial post-hole digging in order to get past a few heavy rocky areas. It performed very well at this task and cut our time considerably in those areas. Note that the shank is a 7/16″ ball groove shank, so it won’t fit just any drill. It does make it easy to quickly change bits as needed. It also has a dual cutting edge, which makes for quicker and heavier-duty work.
