I wore out a cheap B&D saw; overwork killed it. I wanted a well built tool. I got one in this saw. It is HEAVY after using the cordless B&D, and the blade is loose in the clamp mechanism. Put a good blade in it and it will definitely cut with authority. Now if it will just last….

This Dewalt reciprocating saw is a great tool for the price. I was considering purchasing a slightly cheaper saw but there are some unique features on this model that can’t be matched. The DW304PK has come in very handy and is a great tool to have around.I didn’t consider a cordless model because I wanted the power and consistency of a cordless tool as well as the light weight. Power may not be an issue with the 24V models but I didn’t want to pay 4x the price of thisThe saw blades are easily replaced with a quick release mechanism. Just pull the tab and pull the blade out.The saw blade can also be positioned in 4 different ways to make it easier to get into tight spots. For instance if you need to get flush up against a wall, you can position the blade so that it is closer to the edge of the shoe. You can also turn the blade around so that if you’re cutting down a wall, the trigger will be facing away from the floor, making it easier to cut all the way down to the floor. The tool feels comfortable to hold no matter what position the blade is in.For people that have used traditional recip. saws, this may not seem like a big deal since if you use a longer blade you can flex it to get it to fit. This takes a bit more finesse and in the end you tend to deform the blade a bit.The shoe is a bit different from traditional reciprocating saws as it is fixed instead of pivoting. I’m not sure if it is better or worse but I had no problems with this shoe. The fixed shoe might be slightly better for making plunge cuts when the blade is in the normal position. When the blade is in a different position you can’t really use the shoe to pivot the blade into the material but it is not difficult to freehand it. Or just switch the blade around after making the plunge cut since changing the position of the blade is quick and easy. The motor seems very powerful and I haven’t had any problems getting through thick nails and screws, studs and single or dual layers of plywood. The motor never struggled, even when the blade was getting dull, though changing blades frequently makes things faster, easier and safer no matter what saw you are using. Vibration is good for this price range and the variable control switch operation is very smooth and gives great control. The stroke length and RPM are similar to the higher priced models. Higher priced saws may offer orbital cutting action to increase cutting speed, larger amped motor if you’re cutting into block or steel more, or a counterbalance to reduce vibration. Those features weren’t worth the price for me, for others they might be.I was also impressed by the quality of the case. It is very durable, the hinges operate smoothly and the latches hold the case securely closed. There is also plenty of room for storage of blades. The quality of the case was worth the slight increase of price over a cheaper saw. This is a great value with plenty of power. A counter balance would have been nice but not critical.

I am redoing a house and needed a good reciprocating saw. I was disappointed in the cost of most and the poor design. I found this one on sale and it was the best of the lot. We I got it I had to take it back to the shop as I couldn’t get the blade to stay in. The guy in the tool section took me to another that was on the shelf and it worked just fine. We messed with it for a little while, sprayed a little wd40 into the mechanism we got it going and it’s been fine if a bit stiff. One thing that was surprising is how well it does trimming trees. When my chainsaw gave it up for the day, I started using my DeWalt. It really shocked my crew at how quick it chopped through branches as big as my knee! And it did it for hours without complaint.
