This chisel is very sharp. Nice to see a quality tool that is ready to go out of the package.The plastic package also lets you hang this up on a hook and keeps the blade from getting dinged up.

This is a high quality wood chisel with lots of features. First and foremost it cuts wood very well. I have nt had to sharpen it yet but the quality of the steel seems very good because it has held its edge while working with hardwoods. One feature I really like is the cushioned handle. It softens the blows to your hand while the full force of the strike is transmitted to the tip. There are couple of flat spots on each side that help you hold it is the positron and at the angle you want. The 5/8″ width is perfect for getting in tight spaces and finishing up larger cuts. This is an all round versatile chisel..

Great Chisel & Sharp! Easy to cut wood straight out of the Nifty Included Holder! Use to install a few door knobs & dead bolts. Ended up putting both into my Lock Smithing toolbox! Very comfortable handle & has a much needed metal end cap to use with a mallet or hammer when scoring mortises. Very easy to polish edge for a sharper edge & seems to be a tool that is Quality! Looking to purchase other sizes to complete the set.

OK – So this is not the finest, highest quality 5/8” wood chisel on the market today. Is that what you’re searching for – especially at this price point? Not me – I’m looking for a mid-range quality chisel that feels comfortable in my hand, has a carbon steel blade that can be sharpened to a fine edge that will cut paper thin strips of wood and keep a sharp edge. I’m not a professional woodworker and I doubt that my carpentry skills will ever require a tool that someone like Norm from the TV show would have.My first impression of this tool was that I liked the packaging, with the exception of the plastic bar that swings across and locks the tool in place. It snaps into the bottom groove tightly enough that it’s not coming out, so I’m going to cut off the plastic bar and use the holder/blade protector. The handle has a metal top for tapping with a hammer or mallet and the plastic and rubber handle is very comfortable to hold. There are grooves on the bottom of the handle that prevent slipping and a nice indentation on both sides for your thumb to apply pressure.The blade is constructed from carbon steel. However, there are many grades of this carbon steel. The description doesn’t say “high-carbon steel” (the best) and also doesn’t provide a hardness number that will give an indication of how long the blade will maintain a sharp edge. Speaking of sharp edges, the blade on this chisel did cut soft pine but still needs sharpening to get the razor-like edge I want on my wood-working tools. For the price, I think it’s a good tool and DEWALT hit their target audience – as usual.

This is a good size chisel for the average DIY for routine carpentry work, such as installing door hardware and molding.It has the look and feel of a quality product. The handle is made with a hard rubber material that encases the steel blade which would appear to minimize breakage and blade wobble, and it is nicely contoured to enable a comfortable grip when held for extended periods of time. I haven’t had this long, but when new it was sharp enough to carve soft wood without much “persuasion.” I don’t yet know how durable the edge will be, or how it takes to re-sharpening later. I like the metal cap at the end of the handle which takes a good hammer strike while sparing the handle from damage. Comes packaged in a slender plastic container that can also be used to store the tool on a pegboard hook (or nail), and it protects the blade.This is a nice product, and great addition to the tool case.
