This chisel has a very sharp carbon steel blade. The grip is very comfortable combined with a steel tip on the handle that holds up very well when pounding on it. The angle of the tip allows ease of taking off various amounts of wood. The blade works great on both hard and soft wood projects. It came with a re-usable sleave to protect the tip while not in use. I have never been disappointed with any DeWalt product.

This looks and feels like a quality tool you’d expect from DeWalt. The handle is classically colored (yellow & black) like all DeWalt tools, and it’s made from a rubber & hard plastic material with an ergonomically designed handle that makes it easy to hold while striking The strike plate is made of a thick heavy-duty metal and is one inch in diameter. The blade on this piece is 1.25 inchs wide and 4.75 inches long. Overall tool length is 9 & 5/8 inches. The blade has a straight edge that is very sharp. The blade is made of Carbon Tempered Steel with a lacquered coating, the latter of which is applied to protect the metal from corrosion. The plastic packaging that comes with the tool is handy too. Instead of tossing it away, it can be retained to protect the chisel if you’re like me and store your chisels loosely in a tool box drawer. You can even retain the plastic hook and hang the chisel from a wall mounted peg.

This is a nice sturdy wood chisel. The yellow part of the handle is hard yellow plastic with black rubber overlaid on the yellow plastic. This creates the DeWALT logo. The overall length is 9-3/4″ long measured with a tape measure. The black plastic packaging can be reused to protect the sharp blade. The shiny silver colored metal end cap is 1″ in diameter and didn’t get dented when I pounded on it with another tool.

OK – So this is not the finest, highest quality 1-1/4″ wood chisel on the market today. Is that what you’re searching for – especially at this price point? Not me – I’m looking for a mid-range quality chisel that feels comfortable in my hand, has a carbon steel blade that can be sharpened to a fine edge that will cut paper thin strips of wood and keep a sharp edge. I’m not a professional woodworker and I doubt that my carpentry skills will ever require a tool that someone like Norm from the TV show would have.My first impression of this tool was that I liked the packaging, with the exception of the plastic bar that swings across and locks the tool in place. It snaps into the bottom groove tightly enough that it’s not coming out, so I’m going to cut off the plastic bar and use the holder/blade protector. The handle has a metal top for tapping with a hammer or mallet and the plastic and rubber handle is very comfortable to hold. There are grooves on the bottom of the handle that prevent slipping and a nice indentation on both sides for your thumb to apply pressure. The blade is constructed from carbon steel. However, there are many grades of this carbon steel. The description doesn’t say “high-carbon steel” (the best) and also doesn’t provide a hardness number that will give an indication of how long the blade will maintain a sharp edge. Speaking of sharp edges, the blade on this chisel did cut soft pine but still needs sharpening to get the razor-like edge I want on my wood-working tools. For the price, I think it’s a good tool and DEWALT hit their target audience – as usual.

This has become my go-to chisel that I keep on me in my shop. It came pretty flat out of the box and fairly sharp. But I like my chisels to have a razor edge. These took little work to get flat and ready to cutThings I like:1. The length of the blade – it is long enough for me to use this to even up faceframes when the outside stile is 3″ wide. I can rest the flat bottom on the wood and remove anything that protrudes above. I couldn’t do this with my last primary chisel. It’s long without the chisel being unweildy. The width of this blade also allows me to rest it on work pieces and have the stability from the 1-1/4″ without it being too wide and cumbersome.2. The handle is very comfortable. I can use it for extended periods of time without discomfort and it is rare that my hand slips or I lose my grip.3. Blade Quality – I had this professionally sharpened by a buddy of mine and the edge is holding very well. I’ve used this to create champfers with and across the grain on white oak, hard maple, and mayan walnut. I’ve used this to flush cabinet faceframes for hard maple and white oak. I have yet to use this to hog out a mortise which is a good measure for durability. Things I don’t like1. I don’t like the metal pommel on the back of the chisel. This is absolutely personal preference and doesn’t effect the quality of the product. The metal pommel probably transfers more energy but I like a pommel that dampens sound.

The size is really nice because of the extra leverage the leangth of the tool gives you. I noticed that after heavy use the edge had some light rolling burrs but no chips. Easy too sharpen. Seams hardy

Could be sharper. You need something better for hardwood. Its a good all around chisel
