I have a special liking for Diablo tools and accessories. They fit a range of tasks and are good quality. This Diablo 3 inch x 12″ SDS-MAX Scaling Chisel is ideal for removing adhesives from cement or masonry, thin set when removing tile, and a number of other uses. I had a 5 gallon bucket of latex paint dry up in the corner of my wall and couldn’t remove it with any other method until I used this chisel. It removed the thick paint residue easily without further damaging my block wall (see pictures). I am very pleased with the performance of this tool. It is not made in the USA.

Remember DIABLO. This is the SDS MAX Chisel. It can be used in corded or cordless MAX hammer drills.Don’t have a SDS max drill, see the 4 th pic, get an adapter. See the last pic., you can see the difference in diameter from the SDS+ to SDS max. The SDS max drill, 20+ pounds, with this chisel, will make short work of what you are doing. This a heat-treated high carbon steel chisel, made in Italy. It makes it hard, durable, and long-lasting. From demo work to rust removal this is the scaling chisel for you. And it is the one I needed for the job I have to do.

I’m a homeowner/DIY’er, not a pro skilled trades, so this review comes from that standpoint. The new Diablo Model # DMAMXCH1000 scaling chisel (3″ blade x 12″ long) is designed to fit in SDS-MAX electric rotary hammers (see photo). This chisel isn’t designed for pneumatic tools, or for using with a sledgehammer. A few things to keep in mind – you’ll want to put a bit of high performance grease on the shaft (to make it easier to remove the chisel from the chuck), you want to make certain that “rotational mode” is off, and you’ll want to wear eye and ear protection. A mask to keep away dust particles is a good idea, too.The Diablo is a straight chisel – some chisels have a bend at the ‘business end’ to allow for using a different angle of attack on the work.Fit and finish is excellent – no burrs or sharp edges and the shaft locks into my rotary hammer without problems, and also releases easily. A good fit makes them easier to get out of the hammer when the chisel is hot from working a job. Be careful when removing the chisel from the hammer – it gets hot at the business end.I can’t address longevity – I haven’t used the chisel anywhere near enough to wear out the edge. However, as I have to explain frequently to my wife, such tools are considered (by me, anyway, YMMV) to be consumables. If you’ve ever tried to use a hand chisel to remove the glue used to hold down indoor/outdoor carpeting on a concrete porch or cleanup a concrete pad or steps, you’ll appreciate this chisel in a rotary hammer. It does take a little practice – you don’t want to crack the concrete; you want to scrape the surface. Once you get the skill down, tho, it really saves time (and labor). If you don’t own a rotary hammer they can be rented – but make sure it has a SDS-MAX chuck.HTHRegards,Jim

I have a brick stairwell coming from the outside to my basement. It has some kind of coating on it that is flaking off. It is too thick to remove with a wire brush, so I got this chisel. It did a good job of removing it. I just had to get the correct angle to hold it so I removed the coating without damaging the brick. Once I found that, it took the coating off quickly. It would have taken me forever to do it by hand.

For those with an SDS-MAX rotary hammer, this accessory will be useful for chipping concrete and/or mortar in order to leave a smooth surface. This accessory “snaps in” to the drive chuck of the rotary tool and, with a little grease on the drive tang, you are ready to remove concrete. The length and width of the chisel are convenient for many (if not most) applications. After use removing the “seam” on a poured concrete foundation and cutting up two bags of concrete mix that had gotten wet and set up in the bag, there was no discernible wear of the cutting edge. As received, there was some concavity of the cutting edge across its width which resulted in some marring of the adjacent surface of the foundation (see photo). If this is critical, the edge could be reground to be perfectly true. The face of the chisel exhibited some surface defects (see photo) which could have been due to a worn forging die or insufficient material, but it primary an aesthetic issue as it did not affect the function of the chisel. Overall, the performance was acceptable.

This chisel is intended for breaking up concrete, but also seems to do a good job breaking up other hard materials such as tile mastic and other similar materials. Note that this has a SDS-MAX chuck and is not compatible with the smaller SDS-PLUs type of chuck, nor will fit standard drill chucks. The chisel is well made, sufficiently sharp, and holds up well. It slides easily into my hammer drill, stays secure, yet releases easily.

When shopping for tools I always look for high quality and good value. As a result, I often choose Diablo as a brand based on considerable past positive experience. This Diablo 3” x 12” SDS Max Scaling Chisel is an excellent choice for the large electric demolition hammer I used to break up my old concrete deck. The chisel has fully lived up to my expectations, held up very well and will serve several more concrete demolitions.

This is a heavy duty 3 inch wide SDS MAX scaling chisel. I need to break up a mortared brick patio, and I am going to try and see if this wider chisel will be able to separate the bricks so that they can be saved. The chisel will also be handy if I ever need to remove or replace a few porcelain tiles.Note that this is the larger SDS-MAX bit, and NOT the SDS-Plus style. This is a solid, heavy duty beast of a bit. I expect it to last forever.

Under our concrete plant we get a buildup of cement powder and aggregate. It gets wet and turns into a very hard (almost concrete) which is impenetrable by a shovel. This scaling bit works great to bust the material up, allowing us to scoop the stuff out. Using an 11 amp hammer drill i was able to bust into a 4500 psi chunk of concrete to retrieve a bit which got stuck. I have no doubt that if using a demolition hammer that this bit can tear some stuff up, and handle the heat while doing so. It is definitely a ‘built to last’ bit. Chipping away is not a problem.

I’ve used Diablo products for years and I’ve come to appreciate the workmanship and overall durability of their various product lines. This scaling chisel is another well-made product. My observations:• First of all, this chisel is made for the SDS-Max hammers. These are heavy duty machines made for drilling/chiseling into concrete, masonry, cleaning heavy rust/scale, etc. It would also work well in removing thin set when removing tiles and ideal for general demolition work.• This chisel is 3” wide at the end which helps with efficiency of work. This chisel is sharp and ready for work.• After examining the chisel I couldn’t find any quality issues and found it to be made to last for the long term. It’s a well-made and designed product. I recommend.
