Does the job! A bit expensive for such a bit, but being purpose built, was expected.

These are excellent bit, that stay sharp for a long time. I use them in my business to cut hinge mortises, and strike plates. I see several reviews that say the bearing should be the same size as the bit, however that is completely wrong. The templates need to be a 1/16” bigger on every side or 1/8” overall. If the bearing were to be 1/2” like the bit, then the bit would destroy the template. Commercial made templates are bigger that the hinge by 1/8” so if you cut a 4” hinge the template must be 4 1/8” to allow the bearing to hold the bit off by half that or 1/16”. If you mark around the hinge with a pencil then just place the template so that the marks show 1/16” all the way around the inside of the template and it will be a perfect fit.

I bought this bit to replace a high speed steel bit that was included in a Porter Cable mortising jig for hinges. The HSS bit would burn and dull quickly and I’d have to pay to have it sharpened. This solid carbide bit stays razor sharp and produces nice clean mortises.
