Also called Pipe Taps, National Pipe Taper Taps are appropriate for threading a wide variety of materials both ferrous and non-ferrous. Carbon steel pipe taps are designed to clean and or re-thread damaged or jammers pipe threads. The nominal size of a Pipe Tap is that of the pipe fitting to be tapped, not the actual size of the tap. The thread tapers 3/4 of an inch per foot. All Pipe Taps furnished with a 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 thread chamfer. NPT threads require the use of a sealer like Teflon tape or pipe compound.

- Uncoated tools feature just the base substrate without any additional treatment or coatings and are suitable for a wide range of applications
- Straight flute tools allow chips to collect in the flutes as they cut and are well suited for most applications in shallow cuts

These taps are heavy duty and professional grade. They are built to the NPT standard and used only for pipes of suitable girth and material.They are to be used for on the job threading when pre-tapped pipes are not available in the required size.I guess that with the advent of more convenient systems, the skill requiring these tools will go the way of lead wiping.

This Drill America 5 Piece Carbon Steel NPT Pipe Tap Set, 1/8 in., 1/4 in., 3/8 in., 1/2 in. and 3/4 in. has everything one needs to cut threads in the most common sizes of female pipe fittings. When I owned apartments twelve years ago I had a complete pipe threading set for both male and female pipe fittings including a big pipe vise, but I left them behind when I sold the apartments. So it’s nice to have a set of pipe taps that seem to be well-made of carbon steel. The plastic carrying bag is a little awkward to use since the pockets are so deep, but it does protect the taps from damage and keeps them organized.Luckily, I still have a tap handle from my 30 year old tap and die set that’s big enough to hold all but the large 3/4″ pipe tap in this set. Since the non-threaded tap ends are square, you can also turn them with an adjustable or open end wrench if you don’t have a tap handle. I don’t ecpect to be making a lot of new female threads with this set, but it will come in handy for cleaning and restoring the threads on existing female pipe fittings.

This won’t take the place of carbide or HSS taps but it is a very useful kit when you need to repair fouled threads in mild steel or brass.I had bought a hose reel from what I believed to be a reputable brand name source, when I unboxed and tried to use it I realized it had some defective threaded air adaptors. The maker of the hose reel failed to Q.C. check threaded parts prior to it leaving the factory.I purchased and used this kit in hopes it might help solve the issue.I am very pleased with the results. The tap kit rescued a very expensive hose reel that would have been scrap due to manufacturer negligence.I used it to chase the threads on some other air hose fittings that were giving me some trouble with similar results.I plan to buy some high end taps in the future, these are good for a quick fix but the CS alloy won’t hold up to long term use. Using tap lube will help extend it’s useful life regardless and is strongly recommended.

This 5 piece carbon steel pipe tap set comes in a plastic sleeve to protect the taps. These are made from carbon steel and according to the manufacturer are good for chasing threads as well as tapping in softer metals and plastics. If a person was to thread harder metals they may need to move up to what they are calling their High Speed Taps (instead of Carbon Steel). The set includes five tapered pipe thread sizes (1/8″, 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, and 3/4″ NPT). They look to be quality taps and appear to hold an edge well.I cannot find anywhere on the taps or packaging stating where they are actually made. Their web site says that they have plants in the USA, Europe, and Asia that are producing products and shipping to us on a daily basis.Overall I am pleased with these taps and would recommend them.

One tool in my shop that always goes missing are pipe taps. I have a neighbor who borrows them a lot and then usually come back damaged. These taps are very well made, sharp and easy to start. I use them to clean pipe threads mostly, but the do cut new threads for a new fitting. The quality is evident in the way they were made with no blemishes anywhere. The thread cutting surface is complete with no gaps or errors in how they were built. I am glad to have them in my shop, and my neighbor can’t borrow these taps.

This Drill America 5 Piece Carbon Steel NPT Pipe Tap Set (in 1/8 in., 1/4 in., 3/8 in., 1/2 in. and 3/4 in.) has an excellent build with very sharp cutting threads that perform well in chasing female NPT fittings. I’ve run across steel, brass and galvanized pipe fittings (collars, elbows, tees, bushings, swedges) that sometimes need to be cleaned of factory threaded defects. These carbon steel “NPT Pipe Taps” (not SAE screwbolt taps) are just the right workshop tool (+ Teflon Tape) in obtaining a perfect non-leaking pipe fitting connection!

I have no idea how good the re-threading taps are simply because I have not used them. I can say that they appear to be of good quality and they are a little difficult to remove from the plastic pouch but performance is still an open item for me.
