Description
Record or stream an HDMI signal via USB 3.1 Gen 1 with the Cam Link 4K from Elgato Systems. With its HDMI input, this capture device will accept resolutions up to 3840 x 2160 at 30p. If you need to stream or record at a lower resolution, the Cam Link 4K can also work at 1080p, 1080i, and 720p.
The Cam Link 4K utilizes a plug-and-play design with its USB Type-A connector and HDMI port. Moreover, it is compatible with Windows and Mac computers. Elgato includes a USB 3.1 Gen 1 extension cable, so you can connect to devices from a distance.

Works right out of the box. Connected the HDMI output of my Nikon D850 to the Cam Link 4K , the Cam Link 4K device to one of the USB 3.0 ports of my iMac, opened a Zoom session and voila. For those who may wonder, you can use your DSLR in Liveview mode as a remote camera for as long as your battery will last. The 29m 59s limit only applies if you are recording with your DSLR.

I attached Cam Link to a high end Laptop with the best built in graphics card generally available. It installed itself and instantly recognized the feed from the HDMI output of my Atomos recorder. My studio camera is behind a teleprompter. The zoom session was displayed on the Teleprompter. That put me looking directly into the studio camera while looking at the Zoom meeting on the teleprompter. Conclusion: Using the built in webcam on your monitor or laptop is for kids. If you are a video professional this is how to present on Zoom. I have not yet tested the setup on a laptop without high end onboard graphics processing. I have seen other video feeds downscaled on my Microsoft Surface because the onboard graphic processor could not handle 4K input. This is not a magic wand. If you computer cannot handle 4K, a simple plug in device like this will not improve your graphics processing power. Putting a recorder between the camera and the streaming feeds eliminates the limitations of Zoom recording and bandwidth glitches. Zoom manages the conversation, the session gets edited once all the local recordings are collected.

I bought the Cam Link 4k to connect my DSLR and live stream on Twitch, but ended up using it for a complete different purpose. I’m a teacher currently teaching through Distant Learning because of COVID-19 and being able to connect my DSLR and use it as a webcam has been nothing but awesome. I teach at a high school and have been giving cooking classes by streaming in the evening so students could be distracted by everything that is going on. With the Cam Link4k connected to my personal laptop, I am able to move my DSLR and point it at the stove, cutting board, etc. so the students are seeing what I am doing. The quality of the stream is also a lot clearer and crisper thanks to being able to connect my DSLR. Before connecting the cam link4k, I had to lug around the laptop, lift it up and try to aim the webcam to the stove or cutting board, making my cooking class practically impossible and annoying. If you plan to live stream, the Cam Link4k is a game changer that you will need in your arsenal. Your streams will look a lot better and have a higher quality stream.

I use this to connect a Fuji X-T3 with 50mm f2 lens to a computer so I can take my Zoom video conference calls to the next level. I should mention I also run a Rode Smartlav+ into the camera, and I use an old Aperture 120D with white shoot-through umbrella for my main light. Never fails to get a reaction.

Not too expensive, yet wonderful reviews (way better then the $10 1080p ones on Amazon). I have tried my dongl with 2 different Macs and I could not get the hardware to be recognised by either computer… I even replaced the harddrive and upograded to Mojave to make this work. I really wanted to love this device but right now its useless junk. Please get in touch.
