For fine art photographers looking for a matte medium that can deliver a wide color gamut and high brightness, Epson has developed Cold Press Natural Paper. Made from 100% cotton rag and using a cold press production technique, this paper features a textured matte finish. The heavy weight of 340 gsm, thickness of 21 mil, and opacity of 98% further give this paper the look and feel of a true fine art paper. Also, by omitting optical brightening agents, this media will feature a more natural coloration. Designed for longevity, Cold Press Natural is free of acid, lignin, and chlorine and is pH buffered.

At first I wasn’t sure how much I’d like the texture on this paper, but after having printed on it, I really love this for some of macro work, photo micrographs, and some of my nightscapes. It really adds this great dimension to some of the prints, especially if you have large blurred areas or areas without many features and areas like the night sky. I use this a lot more than I originally thought I would, so I got myself quite a few packs of it. People seem to really love the feel when they hold the print in their hand.

I use this paper for much of my color work. It has a nice textured tooth to the paper and the whiteness of the paper is more restful than a really bright white. The matte finish works well with my color images.

It feeds on it’s own in my Canon Pro 200, but the contrast and depth of the darks is soft. Looks slightly washed out compared to my current paper of choice.
