For fine art photographers looking for a matte medium that can deliver a wide color gamut and high brightness, Epson has developed Hot Press Bright Paper. Made from 100% cotton rag and using a hot press production technique, this paper features a smooth matte finish. The heavy weight of 330 gsm, thickness of 17 mil, and opacity of 98% further give this paper the look and feel of a true fine art paper. Also, through the use of optical brightening agents, this media will help deliver bright whites, deep blacks, and a wide color gamut. Designed for longevity, Hot Press Bright is free of acid, lignin, and chlorine and is pH buffered.
This paper is available here as a 25-pack of 8.5 x 11″ sheets.

I was printing 21 17×17 images for a gallery show. After the first few prints I started noticing tiny gray/black specks in the white/unprinted border areas. Never at the same spot, never more then 2 or 3. Of course I thought this had to be a printer issue. (Epson SC P800). I spend hours with Epson customer service trying to take care of the problem. After wasting about 50 sheets they gave up and told me to bring the printer to a service center. They checked it for two days and told me the printer was in great shape and to bring some of the paper I was printing on. Long story short, the specks were there before the paper ever entered the printer. You don’t see it at all in the darker areas but in the white and light areas the are clearly visible and once you put the print under museum glass they get even worse. It took 70 sheets to get 21 good ones in the end. NEVER again.

I am a fine art photographer and I love this paper for what I do, which is mostly still life and portrait work. It is very rich in color and the texture is velvety smooth. However, this paper requires very careful handling. During the first 24 hours, before it is completely dry, any dust that lands on it can permanently adhere. I try to prevent this by placing the curing print back inside the box, making sure the lid is not in contact with the surface. Once prints are dry, it is still very easy to scratch them just by stacking them. Tissue needs to be placed between prints to lessen the chance of this happening. This is mostly noticeable in dark areas of images. This wouldn’t be a good choice of paper for printing large quantities. It would be too frustrating due to the careful handling needed. But in terms of the end product, this is really gorgeous paper.

I shoot 4×5 and 8×10 film so detail is everything. EHPB delivers the detail and richness required by my images, the matt finish provides depth that I do not find in glossy. My world is not glossy why should my paper be?

This is the surface I have changed to for all my color work. People often ask me what this paper is as they are impressed by how smooth and even toned it is in appearance. Have switched permanently from Hahnemehle 308 gramm fine art matte to this paper. That it is as good as it is makes sense as the engineers who make the Epson printer I use (and love!) work closely with the paper designers to create the perfect surface for their inks!

I use this paper and the 8.5×11 size with my Epson R2000 printer. My formerly standard paper was Epson Ultra Premium Matte, which I still like very much. By comparison though, this paper looks richer and the colors have more depth. You seem to be looking into the paper rather than just at the surface. It also produces great looking black and white prints with deep, rich blacks and clean, bright high values.

I’ve been using this paper for the last 4 years with no problems. The last two orders I’ve received for the 8.5×11″ paper have been completely unusable. The prints come out grainy and blurry.

Love this paper. The colors are rich and the details are sharp.

Excellent color. Reds are a little warmer than Moab Entrada. Cooler colors are about the same. Very nice color saturation. Has a very smooth finish. A heavy, stiff paper – make sure your printer will handle it. My Epson 3800 handles it just fine. Nice print job on misty/foggy photo topics. I shoot mostly landscapes.

Very nice paper, great thickness and strong blacks and whites.

paper has good range, nice surface. I happen to use an older model epson printer, which epson no longer supports in the for of icc profiles. I was able to pull some decent prints, but probably through more trial and error than necessary based on having to use different profiles

This is a very nice smooth matte surface paper. I’ve used it for years in various sizes. Feels great in the hand, excellent gamut.

This is a beautiful paper that prints without any problem on my Epson R2400 manual feed, unlike nonEpson papers of similar weight. Epson does not provide ICC profiles on this paper for the R2400 unfortunately but until I can upgrade the printer I have used the Ultrasmooth Fine Art profile and that seems to work well. The paper is very bright, with great color separation and is an excellent value for a fine art paper.

This paper is amazing. I shoot a lot of night images. Often the blacks look washed out on matte paper. However the tones look wonderful on the Hot Press Bright.

Wish it came in longer than a 50′ roll but I understand why it doesn’t. Colors look amazing on this paper.

I love this paper, I’ve been printing on it for about a year and can’t get away from it. Beautiful color reproduction and a soft velvety look. Epson paper is reasonably priced as opposed to some of the other fine art matte papers. I prefer the white balance of the hot press bright vs. the natural.

Epson Hot Press Bright is one of my favorite matte papers made. It’s very similar to Hanemuhle Photo Rag Ultra Smooth, which is likely my favorite of all.

I’m a pro photography working 24/7 on my photography. Most of my work is for the Internet but my personal photography is printed. I have tried most paper but for last few years have used a luster finish as I was disappointed with matt papers some years ago and haven’t tried them since. At that time my pictures looked flat (to me) and lacked the punch I wanted – maybe just with certain colors, anyway I left them alone for many years. I don’t know what made me try the Epson Hot & Cold Press Bright papers but was blown away with the first print. I expected to write off a few sheets setting things up with the printer. I have never seen my prints look so good. Great blacks and tonal range. Punchy colors, but not over the top, really as close to my color calibrated 30 monitor as I have ever seen. No other paper came close as I usually need to tweek the printer driver slightly – not with these papers – as close as two different viewing sources can be. The scary thing is I made 30, 13 x 19 prints, in two days and that’s getting expensive. Two other points. I don’t see a huge difference between Cold & Hot surface finishes but there is some. Cold might be my future choice as it is supposed to have more surface texture, but it is marginal. The other thing to watch for is it is hard to tell the printing side from the back side. Epson place a warning sheet in the packet to say this side up but if you get distracted even the damp lip test makes it hard to confirm. Expensive but worth it for your best work. Oh I use a 3800 printer.

this is truly the best photo matte paper available. It is the paper that our outstanding photo program uses.

Wonderful for color photographs where surface shouldn’t distract from the image. Images become one with the paper, don’t sit on top like with so many inkjet papers.

This paper has incredible snap for a matte paper but with brighteners added, I guess we can’t be sure how it will look years from now. That said, the surface, weight, and color rendition of this fine art paper make it an excellent value for the money.
