The UltraChrome K3 inks work great for both color and black & white. If you don’t print constantly, they do tend to plug up (at least on my Epson 4800) and you can waste a lot of ink trying to clear the heads, an expensive proposition. I keep a tupperware container full of water and wet sponges in the printing compartment with the lid closed (and the power off), which helps keep the humidity levels up to prevent the pigments from drying out. You have to remember to refill the water container regularly before it dries out, not to mention removing it before turning the printer on. The other thing that works well if the heads need cleaning is to turn the printer off, disengage the print head so it rolls back and forth freely, put a paper towel saturated with Windex (the original, with ammonia) in the printing compartment, and roll the printer head over the wet paper towel, leaving it there overnight. The ammonia gas loosens the dried pigment. The towel will be dark with ink the next morning. Do the auto cleaning cycle, and if it still isn’t right, repeat the windex treatment for a few hours and try it again. 2-3 cycles of this usually does the trick. If you just run that head cleaning cycle on its own, you’ll go through tons of ink without solving the problem. Once it’s working, the inks do great, and Epson’s B&W driver does an excellent job making monochrome prints without color casts.

One again, I have had trouble with the B&H web site. I wanted to order the entire set of 220 ml cartridges but the only thing that showed up was the Cyan color. I called and I do not think the regular crew was answering then phone because I was told that cyan was the only one available, which I did not find credible. Anyway I ordered a complete set from your buddies at Adorama. They had all I needed except (by coincidence) Cyan which I then ordered from B%H.

About one in three EPSON cartridges don’t work for one reason or another. It’s not recognized by the printer or the ink doesn’t flow. EPSON needs to step up their quality.

Ink is expensive. What is more precious, is time. I’ve had my Epson Stylus Pro 4800 for 10 years. Not one ink issue.
