This was originally a gift for my father in law. Now I will have to get one for myself. We are active outdoorsman/hunters. We both have a lot of hatchets, mainly custom made but some mass produced. I have always used a hatchet (usually two) when processing an animal (usually elk and deer) . This one will probably become a go to. I would recommend this product; it not only looks good, but will actually do what it is intended to do.

I ordered this axe thinking that although it is advertised as a hunting axe, it would be good for chopping up some wood, roots, etc. When I got it and opened the package, I was a little disappointed by the size and weight, definitely not what I expected. The quality of the axe is not a question, it’s very well made and comes with a case and sharpening stone.I tried it on some some smaller branches and it cuts pretty well, it just doesn’t have the size or weight to do anything bigger. I’m not a hunter, but I’m sure it will work great for cutting bone, and stuff.

I took this camping with me and it worked really well to chop up wood. It has a cover for the axe end that you can put on your belt also. I didn’t have any large animals around that I could field dress so I haven’t tested that out. It has a nice soft handle that stops you hand getting sore when you use it. Also the handle is molded on to the steel part of the axe well too. I think I’ll make it part of my camping stuff that I always take. It also looks cool as it is all black. It is not cheap but you have to pay for good quality.

I’m a fan of Estwing tools, but I’m on the fence with this one. This axe has one design feature that I do not like – the lack of hand protection. There is nothing to keep my hand from sliding up the handle and into the blade. I think Estwing needs to fix this.Overall balance is excellent. The rubber handle is really grippy even when wet, and it is soft which keeps vibration down when chopping wood. And of course you don’t have to worry about breaking it since it is one piece of steel. The quality of the steel is very good; I touched up the axe blade with an Arkansas stone and it held a razor sharp edge. The large radius of a gut hook like this looks like it would be a big advantage over the typical small blades you see on hunting knives. Plus it makes it far easier to sharpen than one you would find on a knife. And if you’ve ever used one, you know it has to be razor sharp. The sheath is well made, it is really thick nylon with a full leather liner. It’s fully riveted, and has two industrial snaps. The hand loop makes it a snap to open. There’s a pouch for the included stone that even has a small strap to aid in removing it. The stone is about medium coarse, and works in a pinch, but it is too small for the axe side, and too coarse for the gut hook.Overall I think this could be a great tool if it had some type of hand protection.

This axe is excellent for chopping and clearing small to medium sized branches. It is well balanced and weighted very well for swinging. The handle is formed nicely and didn’t tire down my hand from vibration or shock. A nice plus is the sheath including the sharpening stone for easy carry and sharpening when needed. Definitely a good addition to bring camping.

This is a very handy & functional tool to have on your hunting and camping trips. I have used the ax behind my property for small chopping applications. It is very well balanced and extremely sharp. I have owned other products of the same manufacturer & swear by their commitment to offer solid, durable, and professional tools! I would strongly recommend!!

Outstanding product! Can’t be beat for the money and the best part is it’s made in the USA ‼️

My husband is so happy with this axe. He was thrilled to see that it is made of one solid piece. The handle has an easy-grip material on it, but you can clearly see that the entire axe is one piece. The point on the gut hook does not seem to be very sharp, however the hook itself has a nice, sharp blade on it. The best part is that it came with a cover that snaps over the axe blade and gut hook, making it safe and easy to place in the back of the truck for anytime he might need it.

These things are REALLY solid and have a great weight to them. I have not had a chance yet to take this camping, but I tested the strength and durability on some scrap lumber and I’m impressed. Out of the package this thing is pretty sharp, and it also includes a sharpening stone and a case. The case fits the axe perfectly and does not budge once snapped shut. The sharpening stone also fits nicely in the pocket on the outside so you never have to be without the means to sharpen it. The gut hook does not have a sharp point to it like I thought it would, but the rest of the hook does have a fairly fine edge to it. The black coating on the axe is not going to last forever, as it has already begun rubbing off in a few spots, but that’s not a downside for me as I prefer my tools to have a worn look to them.

It didn’t arrive very sharp, but it does come with a wet stone that is stored in the sheath. It took me several tries chopping camp fire wood to find the sweet spot on the axe face to chop through the wood and not get stuck. It has nice weight, but could probably be a bit heavier to aid in wood chopping. The sheath is nice, with good buttons to secure it closed, it is made out of a heavy duty ballistic nylon for durability with an axe. At first the sheath is a bit tough to get the axe into its proper slot but with time it loosens up and is easier to use. The powder coat did not chip while chopping firewood, nor did I feel any flex in the handle when the axe would get stuck in the firewood. Very strong, very durable.

High quality product from Estwing like other Estwing products I have purchased. The all steel construction is solid and I like the feel of the handle. Makes short work of the brush clearing that I did with it. Haven’t used the gut hook yet but a friend of mine uses his a lot so looking forward to the next deer season.

Haven’t had a chance to use it in the field yet, but from all appearances the hunter’s axe looks well made, is relatively lightweight, and having a sharpening stone incorporated into the carrying case is a nice touch. I expect that it will handily earn a fifth star after seeing some use.

This is one amazing tool. I got much use of it making split wood chunks for my small bbq smokerGreat design I have not used the meat hook cutter part but used the axe part forMaking small split wood chunk and splits bark chunks.Comes with sharpening stone but have not needed to use it yet and belt clip holster good weight. Makes it good for the hunter light and easy for back country hunts down the road in season. One of my fears of hatchets are the cheap ones made of carbon steel that do not tolerate accidental mis use or bad aim. But I missed a few times hitting concrete but did not shatter or chip just a few scratchesBut remains sharpBut wear safety glasses.Uses wilderness survival. Hunting camping and myself cooking fuel (oak wood)

This is pretty rugged. Comes with carry holster and sharpening stone. All goes together as one nice little unit. Handy for camping, four-wheeling, etc. I image it would be good for cutting up and gutting wild game but I haven’t tried it for that. Very solid, has some good weight to it and kind of intimidating to look at as it appears it could do some damage in a Zombie Apocalypse if needed.

This Estwing Hunter’s Axe is terrific! The blade is great, but the gut hook is really great! I have not used it on anything yet but am excited to do so. It looks like it will make quick work of field dressing something delicious. I wacked through a few branches with ease using the axe blade. Everything but the cutting surfaces is powder coated to help prevent corrosion. Some of the coating is either chipped off or never stuck to it to begin with. I am certainly surprised that got through quality control at Estwing because anything of theirs that I have ever handled has been perfect. The rubber handle is nice and comfortable to use. I love it!It also comes with a sheath (made in Taiwan… boooo!) and a sharpening stone which fits in a pocket on the sheath. The sheath is black nylon with a leather or plastic liner. It has a belt loop on the back. It has two snaps which keep it closed. There is a nylon strap connected to the female side of the snaps, making it easy to open when wearing it on your belt.

This is a very high quality axe. The size, weight, and balance are all excellent. The handle grip is over molded with stiff rubber for shock absorption and anti-slip; its very comfortable. The axe comes with a cover which has a belt loop and a pouch for the included sharpening stone. I found the edge to be slightly duller than expected “out of the box”, but it honed up just fine. Overall its a high quality item that I would definitely recommend.

I ordered an Axe w/hook and received a machete. I love it. We live in the country and the machete is great for cutting briars and other tall plants. We have cattle and horses an it is good for removing the binding on hay bales. The weight is perfect and makes it easy to handle. It comes with a sheave with a belt hook which makes it easy to carry. We have used it a month and it is still just as sharp as when we got it.

This axe is one for the tools you should have in your collection just because it’s awesome. It feels solid and has a nice heft in your hand, but feels very well balanced. You can tell that you can do some damage with this axe just from its weight. There’s also a cutout in the head of the axe that helps reduce weight but this tool still feels great in your hands. The rubber handle is a nice anti vibrational touch and allows for a lot of grip. The blade itself is very sharp. I tried doing a few test chops on a live, couple inch thick branch I needed to get rid of outside, and it only took a handful of low effort whacks (mostly using just the weight of the axe itself) to sever the branch. Very easy to use. I haven’t had a chance to test the gut hook end of the axe but judging be the blade, it’s bound to cut well. Another great thing is the axe comes with a sheath that buttons closed nicely and has hang points to hang it. Included in this sheath is a nice little pouch for a sharpening stone. It’s a nice accessory to have and there are some instructions that tell you how to sharpen the blade after soaking the stone in water, etc. This axe is just a a great all around package.

I haven’t got to actually use this product yet. I am anxious to see how well it holds an edge. But I am sure, with Estwing’s name on it, this will be a quality product. As I got it after hunting season, I didn’t get a chance to try it out on my elk. With the large gut hook and axe, I am sure, it will make the cleaning process easier. I cant wait to try it out next season.
