Works amazing for clearing saplings from trees and other thicker branches as well as dead debris. I work in the arbor industry clearing Palm branches and other tree limbs so the high vis handle works great and is easy to use. Sheath is nylon with a button tab to keep it in place and is a bit tight to remove so it will be a bit tricky unsheathing it. Solid steel and fairly light weight. Great for my line of work!

It’s ok for a hatchet built to take abuse. Do it’s rough around the edges my axe bit grind is not very sharp and off center. The painted coating breaks off easy. If you want it to be really useful you need to take the time to really sharpen it. It’s full tang so it’s probably never going to break. Not a huge fan of the sheath either but at least it has one.

Although this is marketed as campers axe, I have always called this type of tool a hatchet. I have used my framing hammer that is made by Estwing for many years and this hatchet also appears to be well-made. It is 14 inches long and has a nice balance. I used it to cut medium sized branches and it works well for that purpose. The hatchet is sharp and the blade is gradually tapered so you can really sink it into the branch and remove large chunks of wood. I tried to use it to split wood but it did not work for that purpose because of the gradual tapered blade. Overall nice tool.

Overall a great tool. I backpacked with it on my belt all weekend , never once felt it weighing me down. My hiking crew encountered 40MPH winds that were unexpected , I was able to use this hatchet to quickly sharpen 1″ diameter sticks into extra rain cover stakes that I could drive deeper into the ground than standard tent stakes. Comfortable in the hand, the back end of the hatchet blade has almost as many uses as the blade itself .. overall a great tool!

I needed a new hatchet since the wooden handle on my old one broke.I bought this for two reasons, I own a couple Estwing hammers and I liked the look, feel and balance of this axe.

Great hatchet. In typical Estwing fashion I believe this may be indestructible.

The last thing you may think about when getting an axe is the grip, but the first thing I have to talk about is that; the grip on this axe is Great! It fits perfectly in your hand, when you use it to hammer stakes in it absorbs most if the impact, but that is not all that makes this axe great. It has good balance and features including a well built sheath, it’s sharp, and the notches come in real handy. Oh and I almost didn’t mention one of the most important things…it is built in the great USA!

A relatively lightweight and comfortable hand axe, well balanced for its intended use (camping), reduces small branches quickly to pieces of kindling. A notch is provided on the bottom of the head to assist in pulling out tent stakes. While chopping up a branch into small pieces, little, if any, impact was transmitted through the cushioned handle and the lightweight permitted accurate placement of the axe head on the branch. This same light weight may preclude use on heavier duty tasks as it will result in a tendency for the head to deflect, but this size axe is not intended to fell trees, but, rather, to reduce branches to a reasonable size. When used within its intended scope it worked well (see pictures of branch). When an attempt was made to trim a corner off a large timber, the deflection of the head prevented accurate placement. The Nylon/Vinyl sheath will protect the axe head (and one’s body parts), however it is a really tight fit…perhaps it will “loosen up” with use, but as received, one has to really force the female snap over the male portion to get it to “seat”.
