So far Ive purchased four of these 4TB drives for mobile backups, and have not been disappointed. A couple of similar Seagate drives failed on me, so I started looking for other options. The LaCie drives are overpriced in my opinion, and Glyph does not sell a 4TB USB-powered portable drive. I was reassured to learn G-Tech is backed by the Western Digital name and quality. Ive been using internal WD drives with no issues for years. Ill be buying more of these G-Tech mobile drives for sure.

Reliable drives – compact, great for remote work.

In the context of backups and long term storage this one of the top drives available. It has a combination of speed, compact, and lightweight. It is about 1/3 lb. In perspective, at 140MB/s speed it is almost 2x Firewire 800, and about 1/3 the speed of G-Drive SSD. It is a mechanical drive so it may not be as durable as a SSD, but it is an exceptional option for long term reliable backups.

great little drive for the price

This is one of many G-Drive external hard drives I have purchased, being used as a backup for my digital photography. It is Mac compatible and simply requires plugging it in. It is an excellent and well made mini hard drive. I only gave it 4 stars because, after using it, I saw that it was partitioned, with information to be used with a PC. I was able to remove the partition but had to spend time figuring out how to do this.

When this showed up free for buying another larger drive everyone in the office wanted it . . . convenient and fast.

Does what it is designed to do

The drive is my go-to location work drive. Photos from my full frame canon dslr, prores 422 hq files from my blackmagic – this drive can work them all, no problem. The performance is excellent, thus deserving all 5 stars. But it is not all-around hard/software like lacie. I recommend you to buy a protective case for support!

Needed a general purpose USB drive. This one works fine and is quite as expected.

This Drive is a perfect Time Machine backup drive – reliable, built well, quiet and small!

I do a lot of video and raw photo work and I love this hard drive for its portability, speed and reliability. It never fails to perform and with 1TB of space I can get a lot on it without feeling like I have too many eggs in one basket in case there would be an unexpected failure. I’m a G-DRIVE fan. Just feels good in my hand, too.

I have used G-Technology external drives for years. I swapped out an older drive for this G-Technology G-Drive mobile USB-C drive for use as an Apple Mac Time Machine backup drive. I have this connected to the Apple Thunderbolt Display using the G-Technology provided cables. The drive is quiet. Even though I have it setting within feet, I do not hear the drive working and even check the most recent backup time to make sure. The drive is cool to the touch even though it is backing up my information regularly. Ive not had any problems with the drive and do not expect to experience any complications. The drive has been backing up my information for over two weeks now and I expect the drive to continue working for years to come. I strongly recommend this product and G-Technology products in general.

I use this drive to store a lot of 4K footage and I edit off of it regularly. I’ve had it for a year now and it has yet to let me down. It’s still super fast, super smooth and super easy to use. I don’t know what I would do without it. I would recommend getting a protective carrying case for it if you want to avoid scratches and keep you footage safe. 🙂

It took a lot of time with a B&H phone rep to figure out which of 3 portable G-Tech drives would connect to my Airbook and how, but this one uses a standard USB and is cheaper than the one with the TB 2 plug and adapter. I bought two and exchanged one of them immediately because there was noise from the unit and the power light was wonky. They are quiet and I wanted the 7200 RPM.

I’ve bought 5 of these so far for small media management across multiple Mac computers, before transferring to RAID system. They are faster than 5400 rpm drives, and other than daisy-chaining there is no advantage to Thunderbolt 2 for single drives like these.

The drive is a 5 star drive – so why the 3 stars? Because the use case for Windows is wildly unsupported. Product documentation in the box points you to a website that is lacking in documentation. Don’t worry though, dust off your Google cap and do some sleuthing and you’ll find what you need to get this drive installed and up and running backing up your files.

Easy to use. Arrived quickly. Very quickly

After a short time and little use, this device will no longer mount, so it is unusable. The support site is almost impossible to navigate, and the live chat simply does not respond. Avoid this product.

Took it to a trusted diagnostic service, and they said there was a hardware malfunction that was not due to misuse.
