Designed for those who need portable storage for their photos, videos, music, documents, and more, the silver 2TB G-DRIVE mobile USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C External Hard Drive from G-Technology provides users with 2TB of plug-and-play storage and a USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C interface that supports data transfer speeds of up to 140 MB/s. It comes preformatted HFS+ for macOS 10.11 and later and can also be used with Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 via a simple reformat. The G-DRIVE mobile is compatible with the Thunderbolt 3 interface, is powered solely using the USB or Thunderbolt bus, and comes housed in an aluminum case. Included is a USB Type-C to USB Type-C cable and a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable that are compatible with USB 3.1 Gen 1, which is also known as USB 3.0. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

Although I’ve had problems with g-tech drives in the past, this one has, so far, been great. The only thing that really separates this drive from others in its class is that the metal enclosure has a slightly rough patina which keeps it from slipping, or even moving, on most surfaces. I think that’s my favorite feature of the drive.

This is the second G-Technology external HD I buy, this time for a friend who needed to set-up Time Machine for a Mac (she has another one). I’m really satisfied with this drive; it’s incredibly compact and quiet. Just plug and play right away! It comes with two USB 3.1 cable options to choose from (C to C and C to A). Although there’s no need to install any drivers or software, you will have to remove a Windows-related file to have the drive completely free for all your Mac stuff.
