The installation was simple and the directions were detailed. I paired this with the GE smart water filter also seen in the picture. I have very hard water and I have had to set this at 125 (default setting is 25) to get my water softened to zero but it does a good job. At that setting I am adding a bag every 3 days or so. I thought this was a smart water softener like the water filter but it is not. The 40,000 grain like this one is the smart version. I had added the 40k to my cart and switched to this one because my calculation was 48k and I didn’t notice is wasn’t smart until I was installing it.

Unit works great. Very quiet and efficient. One nuance: the old Kenmore water softener had female 3/4″ couplings at the softener and my pipes also have female 3/4 inch pipe fittings at the other end. This GE has 1″ pipe fittings on the softener unit. Therefore you will need to replace your old connectors with ones that are 1 ” female on the one end and 3/4 ‘ female on the other end. I found 24″ long couplers in stainless steel to do the job for a fast DIY install. Your connections may be different. I was not able to find a suitable adapter and therefore went the 1’ x 3/4″ x 24″ stainless. Easy install with fewer connections (fewer potential leak points).
