Very good starter set for the occasional user. It has all of the most common sizes needed for general use.Only 4 stars because for some reason the case does not have a carry handle.

The Gear Wrench Tap and Die Set is Perfect for an active DIY person or pro who sometime needs a small SAE tap or Die. I like the Ratcheting “T” wrench. The T wrench includes adaptors for both taps and dies included in the set. If you are working with an existing threaded part, the thread gage is handy for determining whether the thread is coarse or fine pitch. The case does a good job of organizing the taps, dies, adapters and the Ratcheting “T” wrench and keeps all of these parts in their place when closed. I used the 3/8-inch tap and die to thread a 3/8-inch rod and to tap a 3/8 inch hole in a piece of square tube. Both the tap and die performed well on A36 steel and you can view the 2 pieces mated together in the pictures. I would recommend this set to a friend or neighbor.

This is a SAE tap and die set that comes nicely packaged and with many of the most common sizes used. The supplied T-handle is very robust and has a positive ratchet with a switch to reverse directions. The taps and dies include both course and fine thread. There are two different size tap adapters allowing for a secure attachment and a T-bar for quicker threading, while the die adapter accommodates the entire range of sizes. There is a hex wrench for securing the dies to the adapter, again for a very solid connection. Also included is a thread gauge to confirm the work done. The set comes packaged in a solid compact blow-molded case with good markings with size identification. There is an included tap – drill conversion chart so you know what size drill bit to use, but wish it were printed on a piece of more permanent plastic rather than a piece of glossy paper. I used the set to create some threaded keys for securing attachments to the gear track of my fishing kayak and it did a great clean job. Overall, this is a wonderful set that should be in every DYI person’s tool box.

GOOD SET for DIES but LACKS INSTRUCTIONS and DRILL BITS — The Gearwrench Ratcheting Tap and Die Set (40-Piece) has 17 dies and 17 taps. One good feature is the ratcheting T wrench which is probably more useful with dies than taps. Without instructions, you are left on your own to discover that the tap adapters will fit inside the T wrench so that it can be used with taps also. I though preferred using the tap adapter with T-handle bar. The set has a thread measuring gauge. In the past I have purchased taps and the associated drill bits as I have needed them. My existing taps appear to be of a higher quality than the ones in this set. Since the set does not include the associated drill bits, I would recommend buying the taps and drill bits when you need them rather than purchasing this set. For example, HD sells the tap and associated drill bit # 29 for less than buying just the drill bit, so this set offers no price advantage on taps. Since HD does not sell the bits in the store, it would have been quite helpful to have them included in the set. If your primary use is for the dies and you are likely to use multiple sizes, then this set makes sense economically. The set is made in Taiwan. The tap and die components are not covered under the Gearwrench Lifetime Warranty.

I found the GearWrench Ratcheting Tap and Die Set (40-Piece) to be a quality product at a reasonable price. This is my first time owning a tap and die set, my experience based on using them at work or belonging to others. Most machine screws nowadays are metric, but this SAE (standard) set is perfect for repairs on older equipment where you are more likely to need to make a fix in this size. Some prior knowledge of how to use a tap and die is essential as the instructions are lacking. I did some experimenting with both metal and PVC parts and found it easy to use with good results. I don’t see this standing up to the rigors of a machine shop but for the do-it-yourselfer or the professional that only needs it occasionally, this would be a smart buy.

A complete set of smaller (sizes included viewable in attached photo) SAE taps and dies of medium quality (NOT machine shop quality which would cost 10 times as much) for infrequent use as needed by most handyman. SAE sets are most commonly needed with older machinery which are probably more likely to need retooling anyway due to multiple repairs. A lot of newer stuff however is metric these days so keep that in mind. Unique ratcheting system for convenience and ease of operation, especially useful when quick repairs are needed. Included is a thread pitch gauge for selecting proper sizes. Comes with sturdy well thought out carrying case to keep things organized (and findable) instead of my thirty year old set (which this is replacing) which nothing ever seemed to stay where they belonged when trying to find the one piece I actually needed. Nothing seems to be as frustrating as knowing you have the proper tool but simply can’t find it when you need it.

Nice Tap and Die set with a good assortment of commonly used sizes. The taps and dies appear to be good quality steel and are well machined. The real plus for me is the ratcheting handle which is very comfortable in the hand. The ratcheting handle makes the job much easier on the user and makes the set well worth while. The set comes in a sturdy box and has a very good warranty. This is a good starter set for the home user.

This is an innovative step up from my previous tap and die set. The GearWrench Tap and Die set included a 5 degree ratcheting handle with a directional switch that can be used with both the taps and dies. This makes the process far easier including helping one maintain plumb when tapping into a hole. The set also includes a t-bar for the taps if you prefer to turn it manually. A thread gauge and a drill size chart are also included.Included sizes:Taps and Dies:4-40 NC taper6-32 NC taper8-32 NC taper10-24 NC taper12-24 NC taper1/4-20 NC taper5/16-18 NC taper3/8-16 NC plug7/16-14 NC plug1/2-13 NC plug10-32 NF taper1/4-28 NF taper5/16-24 NF taper3/8-24 NF plug7/16-20 NF plug1/2-20 NF plug1/8-27 NF NPT pipeI tested the set by creating new threaded holes for 6-32 and 8-32 screws. Additionally I had a rusted bolt/nut and I used both the tap and the die to clean the threads and restore them to their original quality. Overall the set worked very well and is a good product for someone who is not tapping and cutting on a daily basis.

A great little set of metric taps and dies to have around the house. It has a lot of functionality built into the handling of both taps and dies, for instance, it has a thread gauge to determine which component to use, a ratcheting wrench to easily run the component over the threads in both directions, and other items for use in hard to reach areas. The quality is great and the cuts are clean as seen in my pics.

Obtained this package as I do a lot of work tapping into water lines and couplings for the express purpose are very expensive.Set comes in a heavy duty plastic case with easy access to taps and dyes, as well as a guide for drill bits needed for the tap size.I tried this out on a plastic coupling that will be tapped for a drain faucet.Followed the instructions and it was simple, but take caution to keep the tap perpendicular to the area being tapped. The drive handle is a ratchet, and works very well in this situation.

SUMMARY: A GREAT SAE TAP AND DIE SET FOR THE DIY SHOP.BACKGROUND: A tap and die set is one of those things that most homeowners may not use on a regular basis. But when you need one nothing else will do. I didn’t have a good SAE set, so the chance to evaluate the GearWrench set was too good to pass up.FIT AND FINISH: The set is on the same level and the other GearWrench tools I own. The taps and dies appear rugged enough to do the job for me as a DIYer. I really like the GearWrench handles and holders. The kit includes a selection of taps and matching dies, a die size adapter, two tap holders, a T-bar for the tap holders, a die holder, an Allen wrench, a thread pitch guage, and a ratcheting T-Handle. The ratcheting handle is heavy-duty (for the tap and die sizes in the kit.) OPERATION: I already had a project that needed a thread cut. I used the thread pitch gauge to verify the 20 pitch thread, then selected the ¼ x 20 die, mounted it in the ratcheting handle and extended the threads on a fixture bolt. The die and handle worked perfectly. SUMMARY: A great mid-sized tap and die set.PROS: Rugged, easy to use
