I don’t have any experience with this brand, so I can’t speak to how well this — or any of their other products — will hold up, but I haven’t had any problems so far; everything has cut threads as I expect it to. The ratcheting handle is a pretty great idea and has proven very convenient. Everything fits well in the included carrying case. My only complaint is that I do with it came with a few larger sizes.

Tapped out my Polaris RMK y pipe hole. Worked perfectly to fix the crosses up threads. I I’ve the ratcheting handles. Great tap and die set.

Nice large set to handle most needs, good quality, and excellent storage case (review video below). This set is both SAE and metric and ranges from 3mm to 12mm and #4 to 1/2 inch including both taps and dies. It also comes with metric and SAE thread pitch gauges, 2 tap collets which are nicely machined, and a ratcheting handle used for both taps and dies. I really like the plastic blow molded case that helps you keep the set organized and is well labeled so you don’t have to squint to read the tiny writing on the tools. The clasps on the case are better than the typical plastic case and I expect it to hold up better long term. Keep in mind to use the tap set you’ll need a set of numbered drill bits (not included). Fractional sets will not give you the right sized holes. It’s probably not a machine shop quality but I expect it to handle my needs for decades to come. About my rating:5 stars – Exceeds all expectations. Better than the competition in all aspects, design, cost, operation, and support (A+). 4 stars – Nicely done. Better than the competition and solves the problem. (B)3 stars – Works as expected. Has some shortcomings but gets the job done. Might be short in design, cost, longevity, or support. (C).2 stars – Falls short of expectations and needs improvement. Pass and look elsewhere. (D)1 star – Fails miserably. Does not get the job done, might even make things worse. Someone at the company should be fired. (F)

Even better than expected. This is a quality set, and my favorite part has to be the ratcheting handle that is reversible.

It’s a great tap and die set. You just have to get your drill bits.

I’m retired now, starting as a mechanic in 1968. I have gone through every tool truck brand & the Craftsman sets. This is the most complete and accurate set you can buy. Sure you need your own drill bits to match your needs, but every mechanic needs those drills anyway. I have found everyone of these tap & dies to cut cleanly and accurately. With the ratcheting holders this set does the job for any job you find yourself doing.

Well built, quality product made in Taiwan, not red china

Had a problem with my Toyota Highlander the dealership said would cost $1600 to fix. The particular job required a tap and die set and a little patience to correct. The Gearwrench set worked perfectly and the problem was solved. Total cost about $160. And I have a great tap and die set to boot. What’s not to like. Thanks Gearwrench.

I am impressed with this set for the price. It has everything you need up to 3/4″. The machine work on the taps & Dies looks quite sharp. I have only used one so far to clean up threads and it worked great, but this is not a very good test. The storage box is very nice and the hand tools are impressive. The smaller “T” handle even comes with a 3/8″ adapter so that you can use it with your 3/8″ sockets as a driver. In one of the questions in this advertisement some one said that the set was made in Mexico, mine says it is made in Taiwan. The only reason I did not give this set a 5 star was because the add stated that it had a limited lifetime warranty. When I read the fine print after I got it, it states that the hand tools are guaranteed but the taps and dies are normal wear and tear, bummer.

I put this set through somewhat challenging use finding that the taps dull with too rapidly when tapping in steel, even when using cutting oil specifically formulated for that purpose. I plan to address that by replacing the taps with ones of higher quality as they wear out. I had no such issue with the dies. The selection of taps and dies sizes is pretty good. I like the case provided with this set as it makes for good organization of both the taps and dies, holding them in place. Clear marking is molded into the case for sizes. The ratcheting drive is handy because it comes with adaptation features that permit use of extensions and GearWrench ratchet handles, increasing its versatility. I have down-rated this product solely because of my experience with tap durability for the sizes I used. Otherwise it is a good product overall.

This GearWrench 75 piece SAE/METRIC Tap and Die Drive Tool Set is as complete a tap and die set as most craftsman/mechanics will ever need or want, even including a metric and a inch screw pitch guage which will allow you to know exactly what the screw (metric or American ) is that you need to tap or chase the threads on, and believe me with what you buy coming from all over the world, knowing exactly what you are dealing with is extremely important! Only time will tell how long they will last, but based on looks, I will be surprised if I ever need to purchase another tap or die. The reason for the 4 star rating instead of a 5 is the lifetime warrant does not apply to Tap and Die components? I think that “GearWrench” may need to re-think that if they hope to compete in the quality tool market.

As of today, 16Jan 2013, the set pictured is a 40 piece set. The 75 piece set comes with much more. I bought my set over a year ago but just recently used it for the first time. I was extremely impressed. I used it to chase the threads in multiple engine components as I pulled the engine in my 1967 Dodge apart. I also used it to remove two broken exhaust manifold studs by carefully drilling out as much of the stud as I could without damaging the thread in the heads and used the tap to cut out the remaining threads of the stud. Took some time, but worked flawlessly. The ratcheting adapter is awesome. A buddy of mine helping with the stud removal commented several times how much he wished he had one.The only reason I didn’t rate it a higher value is the price has gone up 50% since I bought mine. I paid just under $100 a little over a year ago. Still, it’s a good value. Not sure why the price had to go up…maybe because they knew they had a good product.

So far it works very well. My only concern is if the threads will hold up.
