Quality socket set for the newer or European style cartridge filter covers.Like the other Gearwrench tools I have, these sockets ooze quality. They are very well machined, and very well marked with both engraved size and contrasting white printed size. The entire profile is less than 1 1/4″ inches, including the socket receiver (see photo). That’s important to fit into tight spaces. All this comes in a very nice compact plastic case (see photo). If you have this style of oil filter setup, this investment is well worth it. Expect to see more of this style since cartridge filters are considered more environmentally friendly.Note: does not fit the larger spin-on metal oil canister filters.Made in Taiwan

Decent tools, but these are all small sizes – make sure it includes the sizes you need! I didn’t pay much attention and (not cleverly) assumed a set of six oil filter wrenches would do what I need, but it doesn’t have any of the bigger sizes. The set includes 24mm, 27mm, 29mm, 32mm, 36mm and 38mm (the largest size is about 1-1/2 inches). I needed 65mm and 76mm so I’m out of luck. The tools are nicely made in Cr-V steel (wanted to replace my flimsy feeling aluminum wrenches) and have the sizes and “GW” printed on the side. The plastic box also has the size embossed on it. The lid is molded to the bottom, so you would have to cut the hinge off if you wanted to use just the bottom part as a tool box tray (which is what I usually do). Overall, I would say it’s not bad, but the coverage isn’t great. I could do without “Vauxhall” and “Saturn” sizes if it had more “Toyota” and “BMW” coverage…

These sockets are probably overkill for my use. I could get by with standard sockets. But the low profile and the concave bottom of the sockets work better. The sockets fit the canister cap better then a standard socket. They are 3/8″ drive, so you are less likely to over-torch the cap, and damage something. The sockets are well constructed. They are not the cheep pressed sheet metal that you find in cheep sockets. They are a forged steel socket like you expect from a quality socket. The set comes in a nice molded case but it uses flexing plastic as a hings, so it will not stand up to frequent use.I was going to provide a picture of the socket on the cap, but I forgot to take it when I had everything apart.

Great service. Very sturdy. Comes on very handy at work for those Chevy and Audi oil filter canisters.

It doesn’t show in the pictures but these sockets came with a hard plastic casing! Haven’t had any issues getting cartridge style filters off from tight spaces & I use these for work as a Maintenance tech at Firestone Complete Auto Care. Definite recommend these instead of the ones from the truck!!!

Most manufacturers are covered with this kit: Cadillac, BMW, Dodge Cummins, Ford Trucks, GM, Saturn, Volvo, VW, and even Vauxhall packaged in a small toolbox to keep everything organized and available when needed. The storage case includes the applications for each of the oversized sockets. The set includes a 24mm, 27mm, 29mm, 32mm, 36mm, and a 38mm socket. These are sturdy, heavy duty, high quality sockets with the reliability of gearwrench and the confidence that it’s lifetime warranty. Great addition to a mechanics tool set!

GearWrench Oil Canister Socket Set Service Kit (6-Piece) – a Home Depot Seeds Program ReviewI have to admit that these Oil Filter Canister Socket from GearWrench were not what I was really interested in. I was really looking for sockets that would work on a “spin on” style filter. This GearWrench set is for “canister” style filter. The former (spin on) is what’s often found on most modern vehicles and other engines and the entire filter and casing unscrew as a single unit and is disposed of. The latter (canister) has a casing that slips over a removable filter. It’s the canister with this type that this set of GearWrench Sockets is designed for.I soon discovered that neither of my vehicles or lawn tractor used a canister-style filter and was going to return the set until I found my car enthusiast neighbor has a car that uses the canister-style and he prefers it. The set consists of six 6-point sockets that accept a 3/8” drive ratchet. The sizes range from 24mm to 38mm and are made from Chrome Vanadium. The sockets are all well marked with a laser etch and are hard stamped as well with the sizes. I find this common with GearWrench tools and really appreciate the hard stamped size since the laser etch can, and will, wear with long-term use. The entire set comes in a 5.25” x x6.25” x 2” molded plastic case that holds the sockets tightly and securely. It’s a very compact set and will take very little room in a shop. The sockets are very low profile and measure 1.25” thick. Even with a low profile ratchet the entire thickness is under 2 inches. This allows you to work in a very tight spot. According to my car enthusiast neighbor, this is often important and he had no problem accessing the top of the oil canister for removal. Something he also mentioned to me is that proper torque for the canister if very important so installation may be best with a torque wrench. It’s unlikely that I’m going to retrofit my existing spin on oil filters to a canister-style but I may have a future need. The set is very nice and comes in a compact case . The six sizes should suit most, if not all needs and the CR-V material that’s laser etched and hard stamped should last for a very long time. These sockets, like other GearWrench tools, carry a Lifetime Warranty. If you’re in need of a canister-style oil filter set, this is the choice! Here’s the manufacturer’s website for additional product information:https://www.gearwrench.com/6-pc-oil-canister-socket-set-service-kit.html

This is a very high quality filter canister socket set that makes oil and fuel filter changes fast and easy. Whats in the set:Six – 3/8” drive sockets, 24mm, 27mm, 29mm, 32mm 36mm and 38mm.One – blow molded storage box.One – filter size and manufacturer chart attached inside of the top of the storage box. Each socket sets in it’s own labeled slot that is clearly marked with its size. The sockets also have there size deeply stamped and printed on each socket making them very easy to identify. These low profile 3/8” drive sockets are made so they can fit into areas other sockets are just to tall to get into. These sockets take the guess work out of oil changes and eliminate the need find a wench to remove filter cartridge housing top. One note: these are not for removing most standard spin on type filters these are for removing the top of the filter cartridge housing. These sockets grip the hex top much better than a standard open end wrench and will not round off the edges of the housings hex top.I have been highly impressed with the quality of all the Gear Wrench tools that I have reviewed. There tools are functional, they are a great value and should last for many many years.

If you change you own oil and have a vehicle that has a cartridge filter then you defiantly need a set like this. The carrying case is a a great idea to keep the sockets neat and safe. All of the canister sockets have the size of the socket on them so it makes it easy to identify them. I own a four cylinder with a cartridge filter so I use the 32mm socket and it does the job.
