We offer a broad line of polyurethane dead blow hammers in ball peen, standard 1-piece, slim line 1-piece, and sledge head 1-piece types, all built with the strength and innovation that define GearWrench. Each hammers’ head contains a canister full of steel shot that creates a dead blow effect, sustaining impact, maximizing force, reducing rebound, and absorbing the shock of impact. The handles are reinforced with steel for strength and also feature a knurled texture for improved grip. The flanged back end of the handle won’t slip past your grip. The ball peen type has a steel face and peen which allows for conventional use in striking punches and chisels, as well as shaping and straightening unhardened metals. The standard, slim line, and sledge head 1-piece types have a durable, hot-cast polyurethane coating which resists chipping or splitting, and is non-marring and non-sparking. The hot-cast polyurethane coating also reduces noise when striking metal.
- Canister filled with steel shot in the hammer’s head creates a dead blow effect to reduce rebound
- Dead blow design also sustains impact, maximizes force, and absorbs the shock of impact
- Non-sparking, hot-cast polyurethane body covers the steel shot chamber and the steel reinforced handle, no exposed metal
- Polyurethane face doesn’t mar surfaces or absorb liquids, resists chipping and splitting, and reduces striking noise
- Steel reinforced handle is strong and safe, built to resist breaking from an overstrike
- Knurled texture on the handle with a flanged back end combine for a sure non-slip grip
- Red polyurethane body is highly visible and durable enough for heavy-duty work
- Meets or exceeds US federal specification GGG-H-33A

This Gearwrench 10.5 pounds Dead Blow Sledge Hammer is a “Beast”, For many years in my working career it seemed like every day at some point I needed to use a sledge hammer and I have shattered a “few” handles along the way, and sometimes had the hammer “disappear” ( especially in warm weather) so this style hammer with the “knob” on the end should eliminate that problem. I really like the ” HIT” you can put on what ever you are striking and no bounce back. If you need to break something, or move something, or drive something in the ground, this is the hammer for you!

Hefty sledge with true shot for the dead effect. Seamless poly covering and made in the USATool is 30″ high. Head is 8″ long. There’s nothing like a dead blow sledge when you want to use a bit more precision. Sure, I use the old metal sledge when I just want to break some bricks. This is not the tool for that.I find it perfect for impacting wood when it needs a bit of persuasion (example: moving deck joists into position). The poly covering is soft enough to not mar the wood. The dead effect gets the job done without a bounce. This made in USA tool is a thing of beauty. The flat head allows you to stand it upright with no problem. I haven’t used it enough to damage the face. I do wish it had a replaceable face.I have only recently been introduced to the Gearwrench brand. So far I’ve been impressed by the quality of all their tools. Well done.

10.5 Pound Dead Blow Sledge Hammer. Designed for commercial / industrial applications. Good for pounding large wood posts. 30 inches in length. Bright Red/Orange color makes it very visible. Back half of handle in knurled for better grip. Head is filled with steel shot to limit bounce back when striking an object. Dropped it from 10 inches and the head didn’t bounce. Polyurethane body prevents sparking.

A review of the GearWrench 10.5 lbs. Dead Blow Sledge Hammer. I wanted this dead-blow sledge to help align landscaping timbers. The regular hammer I was using would bounce off the wood too much. The dead-blow does not do that so positioning the timbers is much safer. The hand grip is textured so it is easier to get a firm, no slip, grip of the handle. The hammer will stand up on flat ground making it easier to retrieve and use. I especially like the bright color, it is very easy to find! The plastic coating seems to be thick and durable. I am extremely pleased with the quality of this hammer and expect to get years of use from it.

The GearWrench 10.5 pound dead blow sledge hammer is much better than expected.I have used a number of sledge hammers over the years and they were all the same; a large, heavy steel head attached to a handle. Does not get any simpler or more complicated than that. When I saw the toy-ish looking GearWrench I felt compelled to see what it was all about. As soon as I got my hands on the polyurethane covering I immediately thought “this will be trashed in no time”. I went to work resetting the steel spikes in some parking lot curbs. Right away I noticed how much better this sledge was at hammering the spikes than the standard sledges I had used in the past. Not only were the spikes going deeper, faster than ever before, the blows were noticeably quieter and I felt less shock through the handle. Against my initial judgement, after pounding twelve spikes, the polyurethane coating on the head showed no signs of breaking or cracking. Most importantly, it is made in the USA.I always try to find at least one negative about something, no matter how much I like it, and for this tool it is the price. As nice as it is, and so well made it may be the last sledge you ever have to buy, it will not be easy on the wallet for many people.

Sometimes you just need a bigger hammer. I’ve had a 3 lb dead blow hammer for years now, it gets used for many things: from separating frozen automotive parts to most recently ‘nudging’ aluminum fence posts without mushrooming the tops. But sometimes, you just need a bigger hammer. Recently I was trying to separate a hub from a carrier while still on the car (long story), the 3 lb deadblow hammer didn’t have enough oomph. So I pulled out a big steel sledgehammer. It worked, all right, but also distorted the surface enough so the part was ruined. That’s where a big deadblow hammer like this 10.5 lb Gearwrench would have saved me, plenty of focused force without marring or damaging the surface. Live and learn.

This product is extremely easy to handle and does the job exactly as it should. I appreciate the grip this product has on it, allowing me to have a confident swing knowing it isn’t going to fly right out of my hands. The weight of it makes it easy to swing also. This product does perform well with that steel shot canister that is in the head wasn’t as sore as I usually am after demo on a project. I really like the flat top head that allows it to stand freely. I didn’t have to bend over as often scrambling to pick it back up while in the middle of my demo. I feel super confident that the handle won’t rot away like so many in the past due to the coating on the entire product.Speaking of coating, I clipped a few nails in my demo and not 1 single tear. Pretty durable and took quite the beating, and still came out looking like new. All in all I say make the investment if you do a lot of demo. This one can do the job and won’t need replacing for a really long time.

This thing is a beast! Very well-built dead blow hammer. The perfect thing when you need to “persuade” A stubborn part into place, but you don’t want to deform or Marr it. The head seems very tough and durable. The design of the head and slightly loose weights means it doesn’t tend to bounce much at all. Not a cheap tool, but well worth it when you need it. The bright red color makes it easy to find when you go looking for it.

I have been a builder and remodeler for 50 years this January, and of course I often have a need to use a sledge hammer. So when I saw this dead blow sledge hammer, the GEARWRENCH 10.5 LBS. DEAD BLOW SLEDGE HAMMER, I was interested. I use other smaller dead blow hammers, and their advantage is they pack a whallup with a bit more oomph than normal, and this one is no exception. I like it, and the gear wrench brand in general is always nice quality too. I definitely recommend this!

This is the KING of all Dead Blow hammers! Unlike most dead blow hammers, this one is made of a material that is more akin to a durable non-marring plastic than a rubberized one. This hammer is a must have for framing contractors, auto mechanics and more. It works great as a “persuader” when installing a tight fitting pre-assembled rough framing. It works great for breaking loose aluminum rims that are seized onto steel hubs. This hammer works great on any seemingly immovable object when you are finished politely asking it to move. Care does have to be taken not to “over swing” with enthusiasm as you just might hurt yourself but the advantage of this hammer is that you can “persuade” stubborn objects with much less effort. Gearwrench makes well designed, quality tools and I highly recommend this tool!
