The Universal Drive Joint and Adapter Set by GearWrench is another great grouping of mechanic adapter tools that anyone would be proud to own. The only thing missing in this set is a chrome ½ inch drive universal joint, however, there is a ½ inch drive impact universal joint. The main reason I wanted this GearWrench socket adapter set is to be able to leverage the use of my powered ratchets which are 3/8-inch drive to use ¼ inch or ½ inch sockets. This kit is much cheaper than buying a ¼ inch and a ½ powered ratchet. The 10-piece GearWrench adapter set is housed in a very nice case which captures each adapter in place when the case is latched. I turned the latched case upside down and shook it vigorously. When reopened everything was in its place. The case of adapters will also be nice so I’m not searching in my tool box for the the adapter I want to use. I would recommend the set for any DIY type person or professional mechanic.

This GearWrench Universal Joint and Adapter Set is a great addition to any tool box. It comes in a sturdy plastic container and includes two standard universal joints (1/4” and 3/8″), three impact universal joints (1/4”, 3/8”, and 1/2”), and five adapters (1/4” to 3/8”, 3/8” to 1/4”, 1/2” to 3/8”, 3/8” to 1/2”, and 1/2″ to 3/4”). All but the impact universal joints have a nicely polished finish. The impact joints have a black finish, and by design cannot bend as far as the standard joints. The quality and finish are good on these. One note, this set does not include a standard 1/2″ universal joint, just an impact one. This is a great set and I would definitely order again!

As with all Gearwrench products I’ve ordered from The Home Depot, this is a real winner. But I’m not giving it five stars. Why not? Let me explain:First, I should say that I really wish I had this kit before I started building out my collection of both 3/8″ and 1/4″ drive sockets. It’s a huge money and space saver to have adapters that allow you to use one set of sockets on various tools. I also really like having the universal adapters so I don’t have to order a separate set of universals in each size and type of which I already have the standard sockets. The included storage case is also very handy (although some users may want to just store the adapters in their toolbox to save space. With that said, I think there are some issues with this kit:(1) It comes with no manual. I think that’s a big problem, given that there are two different types of universal adapters (chrome and impact), and knowing when to use each one is pretty critical. There could also be some warnings about using an adapter to fit a smaller socket onto a bigger driver. The reason you use a 1/2″ driver, for example, is to handle more torque. If you then use that driver and fit a 3/8″ socket, you might be in for some trouble. Going the other way (smaller driver to larger socket) probably isn’t as problematic, but again, a manual would help.(2) I’m also wondering if most users would want all the adapters that come in this set. It seems a bit overkill to me. A 3/4″ to 1/2″ adapter, really? If you’re using a 3/4″ driver, you probably want to stick with 3/4″ sockets. That piece alone probably adds a lot to the cost of this kit, and won’t be used by many people. I also wonder if most people actually need both the size adapters and the universal adapters. These are two very different applications. It seems to me this could be broken up into two different products, as some people will want the size adapters, and others will want the universals. Sure, it’s nice to “have it all”, but it’s also expensive.(3) One concern I have with using the adapters is that in some cases, they may make it hard to fit your tool in the work area. I’m thinking of my 1/4″ power ratchet, where fitting the adapter and then using my 3/8″ sockets sounds nice, but may make it too long and therefore impossible to actually get into a tight space. Just something to consider.Overall, I will certainly use some of these adapters, but some I will never use, and the only one I truly wanted was the 1/4″ drive to 3/8″ socket adapter. My guess is that other buyers will be the same – only one of the 10 adapters included will be what they “really” want, because they’re trying to fit an existing set of sockets to an incompatible tool.

This is a real nice set to have around if you have all the different breaker bars and ratchets or for that matter if you don’t. The adapter kit will allow you to use a 3/8 drive like a 1/2 inch and a 1/2 inch like a 3/4 or 3/8 drive or about any combination. The impact Universal’s also double as wobble adapters but aren’t quite as universal as the chrome non impact adapters. The standard Universal’s go almost 90 degrees

This is a nice set of universal adapters for your home ratchet sets. I like that it has a mix of standard 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch drives. It also comes in both standard sockets and impact type sockets. They seem to be made from quality metal and are solidly constructed. These would be great for a homeowner like me who has various socket sizes and sometimes needs a knuckle type adapter for certain applications. I was disappointed that there is no size etchings on the adapters and also not on the carrying case. It would have been nice to have that to keep things more organized. I do like the standard case that it comes with but you have to eyeball up the adapters to figure out which one fits best. Overall a the nice foraverage homeowner

I have several socket sets scattered in a toolbox drawer and when I need a specific adaptor, that is usually the adaptor I can never find. This set is really handy to have them all in one location. The universal joint adaptors are so usuful. I had to use one to get an O2 sensor out of my truck. Without the joint socket adaptor I would not have been able to loosen the old sensor. The impact universal joints are really great. They allow me the freedom to not have to hold my impact wrench exactly straight which depending on what I am working on can be difficult. These alone are worth getting the kit.

I really like this GearWrench ¼ in., 3/8 in., and ½ in. Drive Universal Joint and Adapter Set. It comes in a good plastic case, which conveniently keeps all my universals and adapters in one place. It includes the sizes most often needed in any shop: Chrome Universals – ¼” to 3/8” Drive; Impact Universals – ¼”, 3/8”, & ½ in Drive; Chrome Adapters – ¼” F – 3/8”M Drive, 3/8” F – 1/4” M Drive, ½” F – 3/8” M Drive, 3/8” F – ½” M Drive, ½” – ¾” M Drive. They all fit my ratchets and sockets well. This combination allows one to go either way, up or down drive size, with sockets, etc. Every one appears to very well-made. It’s nice to have impact duty universals included in the set. The universals all move very smoothly. Anyone who does any mechanical work knows the need for adapters and universal joints – when you need them, you NEED them. While I have other, cheaper adapters and universal joints, some nearly 50 years old, I’m really glad to have this set. This set comes with the Lifetime Warranty.

High quality set, lets me convert from any size to any size. Ever have one of those situations where you need a small socket that is tough to get off and you need the big breaker bar, I do, need a 3/8 drive and 1/2 breaker bar, now I have an adapter to go from the 3/8 socket to 1/2 inch breaker bar. Also, ever have a large socket that you need the fine pitch ratchet? Once in a while I run into this. Also I only have a 3/8 air ratchet, now I can go from the 3/8 drive to use a 1/2 socket. Combining them I can go from any size to any size drive. The universal joints are also great to have, especially the ones for the impact driver, both types are nice and smooth and don’t tend to bind like my other ones do. There is no standard universal for the 1/2 inch (chrome). Also like the storage case so I now have all my adapters in one place, too bad they did not leave a pocket for me to store a few more adapters I already have or other needs. The case is also a no mix up case, unlike some of the other cases I have where the parts come out of place and I need to resort them constantly more or less negating the purpose of having a well organized tool case. Also there are 10 real pieces, not like some of the other manufactures where the count the storage case as a piece..

If you have a limited tool box, this Gearwrench Adapter Set is a must for you. If you are limited on your ratchet drive sizes say all you have are 3/8 drive ratchets this adapter set will allow you to use both 1/4 in. and 1/2 in. drive sockets. This set also has adapters to turn most any socket into a wobbly/universal socket that will reach those tight inaccessible nuts and bolts. The set also supples universal adapters for use on impact drive tools. You get a lot of value for your money with this set.

I was an auto mechanic for more than 30 years before going into repairing heavy equipment for another 8 plus years. During those years, acquiring quite a cache of tools from big name companies and eventually retiring, much of my tool supply went into storage until I could get my work shop in order as I continued to do repairs for family and friends.Sadly, some years ago a fire destroyed most of the tools left in storage. So as I go along and find items I need to replace, more and more I’m finding myself looking to Gear Wrench for replacements. Back when I was still in automotive, Gear Wrench was basically a start up who sold a very special wrench that nobody else could make. But every mechanic had to have them since they made many jobs so much easier. But over the years, Gear Wrench has expanded to just about every corner of the tool market with top quality products and innovative ideas. These adaptors for your ratchets and impact sockets, used to be you might get a universal adaptor with your socket set. Impact adaptors were typically sold individually as were the adaptors to allow matching the different socket drives such as a reducer to use a 1/4 drive socket on a 3/8 drive ratchet. This kit eliminates having to buy each item by incorporating them all into a single kit. This kit comes in a great plastic case and includes every option you could possibly need for adapting sockets or turning your sockets into swivels with universal joint adaptors. I could have saved quite a few dollars had this been available back when I was wrenching. This has been a great addition to my tool collection, replacing items lost in that fire.
