I needed the internal pliers to reach a pair of deep snap rings in a boat out drive. I bought the set with external pliers because of economy and future need. These worked fine. However the “Double X” geometry results in a loss of leverage. Normally not a problem, but these were large, strong snap rings. I ended up fabricating a clamp to overcome the strong snap ring.

Special use tool with long reach for tight spaces. I used for tiny snap rings holding antennae connectors in aviation radio stacks.

In years past, I have tried to remove snap rings with a couple of screwdrivers or ordinary pliers only to have the snap ring fly across the shop and disappear. Snap ring pliers like these are a very worth-while investment, if only for the time they save and stress they eliminate. These are very sturdy snap ring pliers with smooth action and exceptionally long reach. They come with a set of several tip sizes for larger or smaller snap rings, both external and internal types. The extra tips also include a complete set for right angle applications. With this extra long reach and the option of using the right-angle tips, it is hard to imagine a situation where you couldn’t remove or install a snap ring.

Last set of snap ring pliers you will need. You get double everything, one internal and one external pliers and each has its own set of accessories including spare Allen head set screws just in case you lose or misplace the original ones. I could list the sizes of internal and external tips but I’ll keep it at from .038 to .070 tips I’m both straight and 90 degrees; color coded so you can easily identify the tips. The pliers open and close smoothly with a brushed finish. They are full size pliers at almost 14″ long, but just gives you better reach and leverage when using. These pliers should meet all your home shop or shop needs.

The GearWrench 2-piece Double-X Snap Ring Pliers Set is a nice set to have on hand for when the need arises. They have a good, hefty feel and a narrow design that allows them to fit in tight spaces. The five different angled tips make sure that you can get the leverage needed. The tips come stored in a convenient pounch with an allen wrench to change them out. Bonus, you actually get two sets of the same tips, one for each pliers. My only gripe concerns the internal pliers. The small spring is on the weak side and doesn’t offer enough resistance. When the jaws are fully open they have a tendency to stick and not close under the power of the spring. A slightly stronger spring would be an improvement.

I haven’t actually used these for anything I couldn’t have used regular snap ring pliers for yet, but they are pretty good for normal-access snap rings. Even with the extra-long handles they are pretty easy to maneuver, and are far better than the cheap kind with the interchangeable jaws. I’m sure they work great for hard-to-reach snap rings, too. These seem fine so far, but I gave four stars instead of five for quality, because my experience with Gear Wrench tools has been kinda hit and miss; we’ll see how they hold up.

Set of internal and external snap ring pliers with double pivots “Double X” for long reach. Not completely sure about these. Definitely serve a purpose when you are trying to access snap rings deep in a recess. Comes with extra tips in a little plastic pouch which attach with a _tiny_ set screw. The pouch does include extra _tiny_ set screws, so you can loose 1 or 2 without going mad. Pretty sure the double pivot construction means you loose the mechanical advantage you would usually have in a tool like this – my single pivot snap ring pliers have about a 3-to-1 advantage (handles are 3 times longer than the nose). The first pivot on these is 3.5-to-1, but the second pivot (at the tips) is 1-to-3, so it really seems like you are back at something close to 1-to-1 overall. Not the worst situation, but not helpful if you’ve got a beefy (or stuck) snap ring to remove.

Snap ring pliers are one of those tools I didn’t think I needed… until I did. As a DIYer, having snap ring pliers is one thing, but having the extra reach of these for getting into tight spots is even better. I’ve predominantly used the external pliers, which I used to remove and replace snap rings on the lawn mower wheels. They have good leverage and removed the snap rings with ease. The color coded tips included in the package are straight and 90 degree .038, straight and 90 degree .047, straight .070. There are also two 2mm hex keys, extra threaded insert screws, and 2 small plastic storage bags to store all the parts. In the small time I’ve used these, they appear to be quality tools.

This is a rather nice set of long reach snap ring pliers. The pliers are well made, and come with an assortment of tips. Actually, two assortments of tips (one package per plier and each of the packages seems to are identical). The tips are held on with small “grub” screws, and yes, extras are provided so if you lose a grub screw, there are 4 more available. I don’t often need extended length snap ring pliers, but when I need ’em, I really need ’em. This set does the job nicely.

These GearWrench Double-X Internal/External snap ring pliers are no joke! They are very robust and make quick work of working with snap rings. Anyone who works with snap rings knows what a pain they are to work with. This is where having the right tool for the job matters. Using these GearWrench snap ring pliers makes removing and installing snap rings a piece of cake! For example, I had to replace the snap rings in my snowblower transmission and these pliers made quick work of it! The extra long handles give you plenty of leverage to extend force when removing/installing snap rings. This is a COMPLETE set in that BOTH internal and external pliers are included WITH interchangeable straight and 90-degree tips. For tight areas, I use the included 90-degree tips. Even the 2mm hex key is included so you can change tips on the fly. The dual material overmold on the handle allows for maximum grip – critical when installing/removing snap rings. No chance of slippage with this set! These also reach MUCH DEEPER then regular snap ring pliers. I have to say, I’m impressed with these and glad I came across them!

These are pretty great tools. If you’ve dealt with snap rings, you know there’s no substitute for a proper pair of snap-ring pliers for their installation, or especially their removal! These have a number of interchangeable tips that allow you to access snap rings at a variety of angles. The handles are very long, so they give you a lot of leverage, especially helpful when you’re removing a large ring. The only drawback I can see to these is that length–these will not be super helpful if you’re trying to get into tight spaces inside a machine. So I’m not throwing out my smaller snap ring pliers, but these are definitely my go-to now that I have them.
